Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are one of the most unique and interesting breeds of dog due to their multi-parent lineage. As a mix between Bernese Mountain Dogs and Standard Poodles, they possess the calm and loyal nature of the Bernese as well as the intelligence and obedient nature of the Standard Poodle. This combination of traits makes them the perfect pet for any family or individual. Aside from being loyal, Bernedoodles are also incredibly loving and intelligent, easily learning new tricks, commands, and tasks.
Bernedoodles are generally considered to be hypoallergenic because of their combination of Poodle and Bernese Mountain Dog parentage. Poodles have hair, not fur, which tends to produce less dander, and Bernese Mountain Dogs are known for being low-shedding. When these two breeds are bred together, the result is a hybrid breed that is low-shedding and produces little dander. That said, no breed of dog is 100% hypoallergenic, and allergies vary from person to person.
As Bernedoodles, like other dogs, are omnivores, it is important to be aware of what not to feed them. The consumption of certain types of food is potentially harmful to their health. Therefore, it is best to consult with a veterinarian to learn what type of food and treats your Bernedoodle may enjoy. Avoid offering high-fat and unhealthy treats, bones, chocolate, onions, cooked-bones, grapes, yeast dough, and to avoid any table scraps or moldy food.
If you're considering bringing a Bernedoodle into your home, there are some key essentials that you'll want to buy beforehand. First, you'll need to purchase food and water dishes for your new pup. You'll want to select a solid material, like stainless steel, for these dishes, so they don't easily tip or break. Next, it's a good idea to get a few collars, leashes and harnesses so you can provide control for your pup on walks. Furthermore, toys are a must for keeping your Bernedoodle entertained and mentally stimulated.
Bernedoodles can range in size from small to large. Generally, the smaller Bernedoodle sizes are known as the Toy and Mini Bernedoodle. Toy Bernedoodles usually weigh up to 14 lbs, while Mini Bernedoodles typically weigh between 15-30 lbs. These sizes are considered small dogs within the Bernedoodle family. For individuals seeking an even smaller Bernedoodle, some breeders offer Teacup Bernedoodles, which average between 5-10 lbs.
Walking your Bernedoodle is an important part of keeping them healthy and can vary depending on their size, age, and individual needs. Generally speaking, it's important to focus on quality walks rather than quantity. An active Bernedoodle should have at least two 30-minute walks per day, with five to 10-minute breaks in between to rest and provide mental stimulation. Active young Bernedoodles may require an additional 10-15 minutes of walking each day to keep them at their best.
Bernedoodles are generally sociable and gentle dogs that tend to be very affectionate towards kids. They make great family pets as they bond quickly with their owners and are very patient and loving. Bernedoodles are a hybrid breed created by cross breeding a Bernese mountain dog and a poodle, so they have the best of both worlds — the trainability and intelligence of a poodle and the loyalty and affection of the Bernese. Bernedoodles are smart and easily trainable, which is why they make such great pets for families with kids who need a companion.
Training a Bernedoodle requires patience, consistency, and reward-based positive reinforcement techniques. Begin by teaching them basic commands such as sit, stay, and come, as this will not only allow you to have more control over your Bernedoodle, but will help strengthen the bond between you and your pet. Once these basic commands have been established, you can begin to focus on leash-training, including walk etiquette. Additionally, it can be beneficial to introduce new activities and games to your Bernedoodle to keep them mentally and physically stimulated.
