Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are an incredibly unique and interesting breed of dog due to their hybrid parentage of a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. They are know for being intelligent, friendly, and loyal. One of the most interesting and beneficial qualities of Bernedoodles is their lowto non-shedding coats, making them ideal for those with allergies or who just prefer a home with less shedding. They are excellent family pets as they enjoy children and are gentle and tolerant.
Bernedoodles can be hypoallergenic depending on the type of coat they possess. If they have a wavy or curly coat, it is more likely to be hypoallergenic due to the presence of a tighter coat or the F1B generation Bernedoodle. An F1B Bernedoodle is a mix between an F1 Bernedoodle (first generation) and a Poodle and is believed to have the least chance of triggering allergies.
Generally, Bernedoodles should be fed a high-quality food full of proteins and healthy fats that will support their active lifestyles. Twice a day is ideal, with a dry-food topper that adds some essential nutrition, as well as a few tasty treats throughout the day. Depending on how active your Bernedoodle is, it is important to tailor the food to their specific needs. Most foods will indicate how much they should be fed depending on weight and age, so make sure to pay close attention to those serving instructions.
Before you get a Bernedoodle, you will need to purchase some essential items. Start by investing in a secure and well-made crate or kennel, a comfortable bed, food and water bowls, chew toys, puppy pads, grooming supplies (shampoo, conditioner, brush, etc.), and, of course, the best quality food you can find. You will also need to make sure you have a collar and leash, a basic first-aid kit, treats, and maybe even a natural flea and tick repellent.
Bernedoodles come in a wide variety of sizes. Some of the more common sizes include the mini Bernedoodle, which is the Hybrid of a Miniature Poodle and Bernese mountain dog and typically stands at around 14-17 inches in height and weighs between 15-25 pounds; the medium Bernedoodle, which is between 18-22 inches in height and weighs between 25-49 pounds; and the standard Bernedoodle, which is typically 22-32 inches in height and weighs between 50-90 pounds.
Bernedoodles are very active and loving dogs that require plenty of exercise. A good rule of thumb is to provide at least an hour of exercise per day. This could come in the form of a brisk walk in the morning and evening, along with some playtime or an activity of your choice. If possible, it is a great idea to give them a few opportunities each week to run and stretch their legs outside, such as a hike in the woods or a trip to a doggie park. And don't forget regular trips to the vet to assess their diet and physical health.
Bernedoodles are an excellent choice for families looking for a four-legged addition to their home. They are an incredibly loyal breed known for their affectionate and intelligent nature, making them easy to train and an ideal pet for adult and children alike. Bernedoodle's do well with other household pets, and love to snuggle and watch television with their humans! They are a very low-energy, mellow breed, and they often prefer cuddling indoors to running around outside perfect for those with a busy lifestyle.
Training a Bernedoodle is a satisfying and fulfilling experience. The best results are achieved by establishing positive reinforcement techniques that motivate your pup to learn. Begin by using a reward-based system such as treats and verbal praise for good behaviors. Then, create a consistency around commands used to teach new behaviors while emphasizing desired behaviors. Encourage your Bernedoodle to try new tasks and reward them when they’re successful. When teaching basic commands, provide quick corrections while also reinforcing your training with plenty of positivity.
