Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are a relatively new hybrid canine breed. Developed by crossing a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle, these pups are said to possess the best qualities of both breeds—intelligent, loyal, friendly, and playful. With their unusually attractive coats of black, rust, white, and occasionally gray, they not only make great companions, but are also eye-catching family pets. Bernedoodles are usually seen in two size varieties—standard and miniature.
Managing allergies with Bernedoodles involves taking several steps to protect your pet and reduce the potential for developing allergies. Some of these steps may include regularly brushing and vacuuming their fur, bathing your dog 2-4 times a month with a hypoallergenic shampoo, using air purifiers, and regularly cleaning the dog's bedding. If possible, keep your dog in a room with filtered air and vacuum the room often. Additionally, try to keep allergens out of the home by not allowing them indoors, and using vacuum cleaners that have high-efficiency filters.
Bernedoodles do have special dietary needs, typically depending on their age. Adult Bernedoodles benefit from a diet that is high in nutrients and with no added artificial preservatives and ingredients. It’s important to provide a diet that has all the necessary proteins, vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids for proper nutrition and digestion. Puppies need diets high in proteins for proper muscle and bone development, as well as foods that promote healthy teeth, gums, coat, and skin.
Becoming an outstanding puppy parent while you wait for your Bernedoodle starts with research. Educate yourself on Bernedoodle breed characteristics as well as their likes and dislikes. There are plenty of resources available online, through your breeder, and from other Bernedoodle owners. Learn about diet, exercise, and training methods. Make sure you have all the necessary supplies for your pup, like a bed, toys, food, and dishes. Consider joining an online or in-person puppy parenting club.
Bernedoodles come in a variety of sizes depending on the size of the parental breeds. Their size can range from small to large and they have three official sizes recognized by the American Kennel Club—Standard, or large, minature, or small, and toy, or extra small. Generally, the combination of a standard Bernese and a standard Poodle will create a Standard Bernedoodle that can be up to 26 inches tall and weigh up to 80 pounds.
A Bernedoodle needs at least 30 minutes of walking per day. Ideally, this should be broken up into two 15 minute walks, or three 10 minute walks to ensure your pup remains healthy and fit. With the right amount of daily exercise your Bernedoodle will be more obedient, less stressed and generally happier. Remember, be careful not to over or under exercise them as both can put undue strain on their body. As a general rule, younger Bernedoodles may need up to 90 minutes of exercise per day, whereas older Bernedoodles may require less.
Bernedoodles are an excellent choice for families because of their people-pleasing, intelligent personalities. They are highly trainable and eager to please, so they can usually learn basic commands such as sit, stay, and come quite quickly. Bernedoodles are also relatively low-maintenance, so they are not likely to be the type of dog that requires an excessive amount of grooming. Bernedoodles get along well with children and other animals, and their sociable, friendly disposition makes them excellent family companions.
It really depends on the individual Bernedoodle. Some may require fewer minutes of exercise and mental stimulation than others. Generally speaking, a good rule of thumb is to aim for around 10-15 minutes per day, in addition to a daily walk. If your Bernedoodle is young, it is important to help her expend her excess energy. You should also adjust the training and exercise depending on your Bernedoodle's age and lifestyle.
