Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are a combination of Bernese Mountain Dog and Poodle, usually a Standard Poodle. They are a breed of designer dogs first bred in 2003 and are known for being intelligent, loyal, and very loving. Bernedoodles are ordinarily very active and thrive in family environments, making them excellent companions. They generally range anywhere from 10-29 inches and tend to weigh between 40-60 pounds. They are also generally low-shedding and can be hypoallergenic depending on the type of coat.
Bernedoodles are renowned for their minimal shedding depending largely upon the coat type. A Bernedoodle's coat, which is a combination of both their Bernese Mountain Dog and Poodle parentage, is typically a mix of two different textures – wavy and curly. Consequently, the Bernedoodle's shedding is minimized and can be virtually non-existent if the parentage has been primarily Poodle. Also, as many Bernedoodles are given regular grooming and haircuts, this further contributes to the non-shedding elements of their coats.
Bernedoodles can have some special dietary needs depending on their age. For puppies, high-quality protein is important for their growth and development, and so it is recommended to feed them a diet that is rich in healthy fats and omega 3 fatty acids. As adults, Bernedoodles benefit from a balanced diet that is low in fats and carbohydrates to reduce their risk of developing certain health problems, such as obesity. A good diet should also include complex carbohydrates and enough fiber to keep their digestive system healthy while avoiding sugar and other empty calories.
Preparing for your new Bernedoodle is an exciting time! Start the process by researching the breed and becoming familiar with their care requirements, such as grooming, diet, and exercise. It's also important to decide who will assume primary responsibility for the Bernedoodle. By preparing your home for your new pet, you can make the transition as smooth as possible. Take some time to select the right toys, food and water bowls, and a bed for your Bernedoodle.
Bernedoodles can reach sizes of small, medium, large, and extra large based on the size of their parent breeds. Small to medium Bernedoodles typically stand at 15 to 25 inches in height and can range in weight from 25 to 50 pounds. Large Bernedoodles are typically 24 to 30 inches in height and can range in weight between 50 and 80 pounds. Extra-large Bernedoodles usually stand from 28 to 35 inches in height, with a weight range of 80 to over 100 pounds.
Walking your Bernedoodle likely depends upon your individual dog's preferences and needs, however a good rule of thumb is to provide them with at least 30 minutes of physical exercise a day, which could be split up into multiple shorter walks throughout the day or one longer walk. Regular physical exercise helps to reduce any behavioral issues or anxiety as well as maintains their mental and physical health. In addition to daily walks, be sure to include some form of play or interactive activities in order to keep your pet active, engaged, and entertained.
Bernedoodles typically make wonderful family pets and get along well with children of all ages. Their calm, relaxed, and loyal temperaments help them to be great playmates for kids. Bernedoodles have the intelligence and loyalty of the Bernese Mountain Dog, coupled with the intelligence and non-shedding coats of the Poodle, which make them a popular breed with families who have children. They are eager to please and usually patient with hugs and excited bursts of energy from kids.
Training a Bernedoodle can be an enjoyable and rewarding experience, but like any pup, it does take patience and dedication. Bernedoodles are generally very eager to please and are considered to be one of the most intelligent of the canine breeds. This intelligence can also make them prone to mischief if not actively engaged in activities. With consistent and loving training, Bernedoodles can learn quickly and retain information effectively. A Bernedoodle needs to understand their owner's expectations from the start and patience is key when training them. Set rewards for desired behaviors and punish undesired behavior.
