Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are a cross between Bernese Mountain Dogs and Poodles—considered to be one of the most intelligent dog breeds. They are incredibly good-natured animals, usually friendly with people and other animals. Bernedoodles are known to be very trainable and obedient, usually quickly responding to commands. As a moderately-active dog breed, they enjoy the outdoors and physical activities like taking walks and going to the park. An interesting fun fact about Bernedoodles is that not only do they have distinctive markings, their fur can come in a wide variety of colors!
Managing allergies with Bernedoodles requires taking a proactive approach. The Bernedoodle's coat is an F1B, which means they are 75% poodle and 25% Bernese Mountain Dog. The Poodle is a hypo-allergenic breed, so they generally produce less dander and more hair, which can help reduce allergens. It is also important to make sure that your Bernedoodle is groomed regularly to reduce shedding.
Bernedoodles tend to have hearty appetites, but generally their dietary needs are the same as most other breeds of their size. They should get a high-quality commercial dog food and it is recommended that it is tailored to their age level: active puppies should have a different formula than adult and senior dogs. Making sure they get enough calcium and phosphorus is important for their bone health, as well as applying the correct ratio of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids to aid in digestion and skin issues.
Preparing your home for a Bernedoodle is an important step in ensuring they have a safe and happy living space. First, make sure you have all the supplies you need food and water bowls, toys, bedding, a crate, leashes and collars and anything else you may need in caring for your pet. Then, puppy-proof your home tuck away cords, cover outlets, secure trash bins and keep an eye out for any small items your pup may find attractive to chew on. Additionally, make sure they are welcomed warmly into their new home.
Bernedoodles typically reach their full size anywhere from eighteen months to full adulthood, which may take up to three years. On average, Bernedoodles grow to be between 45 and 70 pounds at adulthood, and 23 to 29 inches tall. However, size can vary quite a bit, depending on the parent breeds, their size at birth, and how early the pup is spayed or neutered. Similarly, Bernedoodles may look taller or heavier due to thick fur.
Bernedoodles are an active, lively breed of dog, so exercise is key to their physical and mental well being. A good rule of thumb is at least 30-60 minutes of exercise per day. Being a cross between an active Bernese Mountain Dog and an intelligent Poodle, Bernedoodles are quite intelligent and love a challenge. For those living in urban or suburban areas, they may benefit from a mix of activities such as long hikes on the weekends, daily walks, and even some games of fetch or agility obstacle courses.
Bernedoodles are typically excellent family dogs and incredibly patient with kids. Their size makes them the ideal playmate for children of all ages they are not too big to handle and their calm demeanor makes Bernedoodles a great companion for any family. Bernedoodles have the perfect mixture of fun-loving and loyal, which make them great companions for kids. Their even temperament and intelligence mean that they can be easily trained to be great family pets.
Training your Bernedoodle can be an enjoyable and rewarding experience. Start by establishing yourself as the leader, and reward positive behaviors with treats, praise, and petting. Develop rules and boundaries that are easy to understand, like "no jumping on people," and be consistent with enforcement. Keep training sessions short and full of varied activities, so your Bernedoodle won't quickly become bored. Begin with simple commands like "sit" and "stay," and gradually increase the difficulty. Incorporate different scenarios into your training, to ensure they understand proper behavior in various settings.
