Bernedoodles are designer breeds created from a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle, resulting in a good-natured, generally low-to-non-shedding hybrid. They are usually very affectionate and intelligent, and they make great family pets. The size of a Bernedoodle can vary depending on the size of the parents used to create it, ranging from miniature to standard sizes. As a breed, these dogs tend to have excellent temperaments, being loyal, and gentle with children.
Bernedoodles typically have a soft, wavy coat with long feathering around their legs and faces. The texture of their coat is unique, having both the coarse feel of a Poodle’s coat, as well as the softer feel of a Bernese Mountain Dog’s coat. It is important to brush the coat regularly in order to keep it tangle-free and lightly to moderately groom it with a comb or brush to keep it tidy.
Bernedoodles are known for having sensitive stomachs, so it's important to know what not to feed them. Human food should be avoided as it is often too high in fat, sugar, and salt for them. Feeding them table scraps can also lead to poor nutrition, gas and diarrhea. Specific fruits and vegetables should also be avoided due to the potential for digestive upset. These include onions, grapes, apples, corn, and avocado. Feeding your Bernedoodle raw meat or bones also poses health risks due to the potential for food poisoning or blocking their digestive tract.
Before you bring home a Bernedoodle, it's important to make sure that you have the essentials necessary for a new pup! Purchasing items like food and water bowls, durable toys, cleaning supplies, grooming supplies, a leash and collar, an ID tag, a crate (for house training), potty pads, and a bed are all must-haves. Additionally, having a consultation with your vet can ensure that your Bernedoodle is up to date with all necessary vaccinations, dewormer, monthly heartworm medication, and flea and tick prevention.
Bernedoodles can reach a maximum height of between about 21–29 inches and weigh anywhere from 50 to 90 pounds when fully grown. While this can vary somewhat depending on the size of their Bernese Mountain Dog parent and the type of Poodle parent used in the cross, Bernedoodles can generally be expected to be a good size and be relatively low-shedding.
