Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are a relatively new designer breed that combines the best of both worlds the intelligence of the Standard Poodle and the loyal, easy going nature of a Bernese Mountain Dog. They have the almost unheard-of combination of being low to non-shedding and hypoallergenic, making them a great family pet. They are highly alert and have a strong attachment to their family, and in addition to being extremely cuddly, they tend to remain relatively calm for a large breed dog.
The Bernedoodle coat is a combination of the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Poodle, so it's usually a mix of curly and wavy fur. Bernedoodles come in a variety of colors, depending on their mixture of breeds and their parents. They have a shorter coat that may need to be groomed regularly to prevent it from becoming matted. Bernedoodles have a distinctive look and can have facial traits from both breeds, such as droopy eyes and curled tails.
Bernedoodles, like all breeds, have their own individual dietary needs, though overall, they tend to require a diet that is well-rounded and nutritionally balanced. They are considered to have moderate activity levels, and as such, need what is known as a maintenance diet. This kind of diet should include quality proteins and grains, fiber-rich vegetables, healthy fats, and essential vitamins and minerals, to maintain good health and weight.
To ensure a smooth transition for your new Bernedoodle into your home, it's important to take the necessary steps to prepare your home for your furry companion. First, establish a safe space, like a living room corner, where your Bernedoodle can relax and feel comfortable. Secondly, it's a good idea to puppy-proof your home by removing any choking hazards (small toys, chocolates, etc). Thirdly, make sure you've stocked up on all the necessary doggie supplies, such as a bed, toys, grooming items, food and treats.
Bernedoodles are considered mediumto large-sized dogs. Depending on the breed they are crossed with, the size of an individual Bernedoodle will vary greatly. When bred with a Standard Poodle, Bernedoodles can grow to be quite large, reaching up to 85lbs. However, when bred with a Miniature Poodle, they may only reach up to 50 lbs. When considering whether your Bernedoodle is a considered a "big dog," it's important to think about their size in comparison to the size of the space you'd like them to live in.
Walking your Bernedoodle for the recommended amount of time each day is important for their health and wellbeing. To prevent their energy levels from getting too high and potentially causing behavioral issues, it's best to aim for at least 30 minutes of daily exercise. This should be spent walking them around your neighborhood, your local park, or wherever else you can take them safely, with a leash and muzzle if necessary. You can add further exercise by incorporating playtime with throwing balls, chasing sticks, and other active activities into the mix.
Bernedoodles, a mix of Bernese Mountain Dogs and Poodle breeds, are excellent choices for first-time dog owners. They are known for their intelligent and endearing disposition, which makes them very trainable and eager to please their owners. The Bernedoodle's coat is generally low to non-shedding, which makes them a great choice for those with allergies. Plus, Bernedoodle pups come in a wide variety of sizes and colors, so you can find the perfect fit for your own home.
Training Bernedoodles can vary depending on the age of your pup, as many Bernedoodle puppies are stubborn and may not respond to your commands right away. Generally speaking, the recommended amount of training minutes per day for Bernedoodles is thirty minutes to an hour. This includes visits to the crate for positive reinforcement, establishing the "sit" and "stay" commands, and getting them comfortable with commands such as "go to your spot"...etc.
