A Bernedoodle is a cross breed between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. Bernedoodles are an intelligent, family-friendly breed, and their size, coat type, and temperament can vary greatly depending on the parents. Bernedoodles are often known for being affectionate, loyal, and friendly, as well as being great with children. Typically, these dogs shed very little and can be a great choice for those with allergies. Bernedoodles also require regular brushing, as their coats can become matted easily.
Bernedoodles are considered a hypoallergenic breed of dog due to their hybridization of a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. Poodles were selectively bred for minimal shedding, which has resulted in an abundance of hair or fur that doesn’t cause allergies in humans. While not all people with allergies will have a reaction to Bernedoodles, it is generally accepted that due to the low shedding coat, an allergic reaction is less likely to occur.
It is important to know what not to feed a Bernedoodle in order to maintain their health and wellbeing. Although Bernedoodles are known to have a strong appetite, it is best to avoid certain food items for the sake of their health. Food items that are not suitable for Bernedoodles include rawhide chews, garlic, grapes and raisins, onions, chocolates, macadamia nuts, avocados, and sugar.
Prepare for your Bernedoodle pup by researching its characteristics and temperament. Make sure you are aware of the breed's grooming needs. Set up a designated area in your home that is comfortable and safe for the pup, filled with its bed, food and water bowl, treats, and toys. Acquire supplies to manage any messes, like a leak-proof crate and quality pet wipes. It's recommended to create a routine for the pup with regular feeding, exercise and playtimes. Include visits to a vet or groomer in your routine.
Bernedoodles come in three different sizes standard, mini, and toy. The Standard Bernedoodle is a mix between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Standard Poodle and can typically reach heights between 24 inches and 29 inches and weights between 60 and 90 pounds. Mini Bernedoodles, which are the result of crossing a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Miniature Poodle, tend to range in heights between 18 inches and 22 inches and in weights between 30 and 50 pounds.
Bernedoodles are generally an active breed, so it's recommended that you walk them for at least 30 minutes per day. If your Bernedoodle is more active or has more energy to burn, then you should aim for 45 minutes to 60 minutes of walking per day. This daily exercise is important for your pup's physical and mental health, and it's a great way for you to bond with your furry friend. If the weather allows, you can even provide your Bernedoodle with outdoor activities such as swimming and fetching a ball.
