Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are a cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. They are known for their intelligence, loving nature, and kind temperament. Bernedoodles can come in an array of sizes since the Poodle can be either Standard or Miniature size. Additionally, they can be any color since both breeds can come in many different colors. The breed is believed to have originated in North America in the early 2000s. Bernedoodles make great family pets because they are very social with people and other pets. They love outdoor activities and thrive on being active companions.
The Bernedoodle coat is truly unique; varying from curly to wavy, and often displaying a combination of both! The coat is low-shedding and hypoallergenic, so it's great for owners who otherwise may struggle with pet hair allergies. The coat is usually a unique tricolor of black, white, and brown, but can also come in shades of gray and apricot, and even sable.
The best dog food for Bernedoodles will vary depending on their individual needs. It is important to find a dog food that is tailored to the breed's specific nutritional needs. A diet rich in vitamins, minerals, and omega-3 fatty acids is essential for the Bernedoodle's overall wellbeing. Additionally, a balanced diet including proteins, carbs, and good fats is important. Most commercial pet foods are specifically designed for Bernedoodles and can provide balanced nutrition while requiring minimal effort from the owner.
To prepare your home for a new Bernedoodle, it is important to stock up on essentials like food and toys, as well as any necessary grooming and medical supplies. Make sure you have a comfortable, secure space set up for your Bernedoodle to sleep and relax, and use baby gates to help restrict access to parts of your home. Additionally, place any items that you don't want your pup to chew on out of reach. Consider investing in a pet-safe cleaner for any necessary messes.
Bernedoodles come in miniature, medium, and standard sizes. Miniature Bernedoodles typically weigh between 10-15 lbs. and stand 14-17” tall at the shoulder. Medium Bernedoodles range in size from 18-20" and weigh between 25-35 lbs. Standard Bernedoodles are the largest of the three sizes, weighing between 40-60 lbs., with a height of 21-27” at the shoulder. Depending on the size of their parents, Bernedoodles usually reach their full size between 12 and 18 months.
Bernedoodles are fairly active dogs; therefore, they prefer an active lifestyle. They will often enjoy outdoor activities such as running, walking, and playing fetch. They are energetic and naturally curious, so it's important for them to have plenty of chances to explore the outdoors and exercise. Although they can be content and even lazy at times, Bernedoodles typically have quite a bit of energy and require regular activity. To ensure a Bernedoodle's long-term physical and mental health, its owner should plan to give them at least one to two hours of physical activity each day.
Bernedoodles are typically praised for being loving and social family pets, and their disposition usually makes them good companions for children. These hybrid dogs are aimed at bringing the sweet and gentle nature of the Bernese Mountain Dog and the intelligence and trainability of the Poodle to one super pup, making them loyal and smart family pets that thrive on human companionship and thrive when in the presence of children. Their level of loyalty and friendliness also makes them great with kids, meaning they have the potential to make wonderful family pets.
The amount of minutes that you should dedicate to daily training of a Bernedoodle will depend on your individual dog's personality, energy levels, age, and training goals. For the average adult Bernedoodle, generally at least 30 minutes per day, four days a week, is recommended. Separating the training into smaller increments will generally be more beneficial, so for instance 10 minutes in the morning, 10 minutes in the afternoon, and 10 minutes in the evening may provide more consistent results than one 30 minute period.
