Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are members of the hybrid or designer dog class. Poodles, originating in Germany, and Bernese Mountain Dogs, originating in Switzerland, are combined to create the Bernedoodle; a loyal and loving breed with the intelligence of a poodle and the reliable and non-aggressive temperament of a Bernese Mountain Dog. Bernedoodles inherit a low-shedding coat, making them a popular choice for families who suffer from allergies. Bernedoodles vary in size, ranging from miniature size to standard.
Bernedoodles are generally classified as a hypoallergenic breed due to their fur and shedding characteristics. They are a crossbred between Bernese Mountain Dogs and Poodles, and they combine the hypoallergenic traits of the Poodle with the low-shedding nature of the Bernese Mountain Dog. Since both parent breeds are hypoallergenic, it makes sense that their Bernedoodle offspring will inherit similar traits as well. Generally speaking, Bernedoodles do not shed much and their coats only require minimal maintenance when compared to other breeds.
A Bernedoodle needs a diet that is well-balanced and nutritious. It should consist of specially formulated dog foods that are appropriate for their breed and size. You should speak to your veterinarian about what food and how much food your Bernedoodle should get each day. When it comes to treats, it's important to provide variety, but not in large quantities. Make sure that any treats you give are also made specifically for dogs.
When getting a Bernedoodle, it's important to make sure you have all the necessary essentials to make the transition for you and your pup as easy and smooth as possible. First and foremost, you should have the right bedding for your pup to sleep in. Any type of bedding should be comfortable enough, but might need special features, such as being machine washable, for maintaining a Bernedoodle's thick coat. Secondly, you should have an appropriate collar, leash, and harness that will fit your pup's size and fit comfortably.
Bernedoodles come in several different sizes, depending on the size of the parent breeds. Toy Bernedoodles typically measure around 10 to 24 inches in height when fully grown and can weigh between 10 and 24 pounds. Miniature Bernedoodles usually measure anywhere from 18 to 22 inches in height when fully grown and can weigh between 25 and 50 pounds. Standard Bernedoodles can stand anywhere from 22 to 29 inches tall and weigh from 50 to 90 pounds when fully grown.
Bernedoodles require lots of daily exercise to stay healthy and happy. An adult Bernedoodle should receive at least an hour of exercise each day, and puppies need even more to help ensure proper physical and mental development. Exercise can include walking or jogging, playing fetch, training, or even just backyard playtime. Regular exercise strengthens the bond between you and your Bernedoodle while helping to keep them fit. Your Bernedoodle also benefits from mental stimulation like puzzle toys or interactive activities, which can help keep their minds active and enhance behavior when included as part of their daily routine.
Bernedoodles are generally renowned for their loving, friendly, and loyal personalities, making them ideal family dogs. They typically get along very well with children, as they have an innate desire to please and stay close to their owners, so they make excellent playmates. Bernedoodles love to be active and will happily participate in rambunctious, energy-filled play, as long as it's within the bounds of their owner's comfort level.
Training your Bernedoodle should begin as soon as you bring them home. Depending on their age, you may want to start socializing them first by introducing them to different people, sights, and sounds of your environment. It may also be helpful to sign up for a basic obedience training class, as this will give you a solid foundation of the commands to use. Make sure to use only positive reinforcement when training your Bernedoodle, such as treats, verbal praise, petting, and/or familiar activities.
