Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are a hybrid dog breed that is a mix of a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. They are likely to have a mixture of the intelligence, gentleness and loyal nature of the Bernese Mountain Dog, and the low-shedding coat of the Poodle. Bernedoodles can range between 30 to 70 pounds and have a lifespan of ten years on average. They have an even-tempered personality and may be less prone to barking than other breeds. Bernedoodles enjoy activities such as fetching, agility and running.
It is possible that Bernedoodles may cause allergy symptoms, but many people have found them to be hypoallergenic or low-allergy breeds. That being said, it is important for individuals to conduct their own research and speak with their physician to ensure that this breed will not cause them any allergies. In general, Bernedoodles do not shed much and lack dander, which is thought to be the biggest cause of allergies. Additionally, their coat and hair is oftentimes on the shorter side, which might help reduce allergic reactions.
Bernedoodles do have special dietary needs. Like all dogs, they require a well-rounded diet in order to remain healthy and active. To keep their special coat texture, a diet of high-quality protein is necessary and supplements such as fish oil and Vitamin E may also be beneficial. It is important to monitor their food intake and offer small yet frequent meals. Avoid food that is too high in carbohydrates, as this can lead to obesity in Bernedoodles.
Before getting a Bernedoodle, it is important to make sure you have all the necessary essentials. This includes dog food that is specific to the type of breed, food and water bowls, a brush and comb for grooming, a leash and collar, and ideally a crate or dog bed for the Bernedoodle to sleep in. You may also want to think about getting pet insurance, and if your Bernedoodle requires a lot of outdoor activity, make sure to have an exercising plan ready. Make sure to look into monthly flea/tick preventatives and heartworm medication as well.
Bernedoodles can grow to a range of sizes depending on the specifics of the mix they derive from. Typically, Bernedoodles can reach anywhere from 18 inches to 28 inches in height, and can weigh 25 to 90 pounds full-grown depending on the mix of breeds in their DNA. On average, Standard Bernedoodles can reach 23 to 28 inches in height and weigh 55 to 90 pounds. Mini Bernedoodles are usually 18 to 22 inches in height and weigh anywhere from 25 to 49 pounds.
Bernedoodles are a crossbreed of the Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle, so they tend to have an active lifestyle. Exercise requirements vary from dog to dog, but it is typically recommended that Bernedoodles engage in at least 30-60 minutes of physical activity each day. This would include activities such as daily walks, jogs, hikes, playtime with other dogs, or an enrichment activity, such as scent work or agility training. Mental stimulation, such as regular training sessions, will also help keep your Bernedoodle active and content.
Bernedoodles have an excellent reputation for getting along great with kids! Their charming and friendly personalities make them incredibly patient and tolerant, as well as eager to please. They are truly gentle and loving companions that can grow to form strong bonds with their young owners. It is also important to socialize and expose Bernedoodles to children at an early age so they become accustomed to and comfortable around them. All in all, Bernedoodles are an excellent breed for families with children since they possess the right balance of intelligence, energy, and affection that will appeal to kids of all ages.
Training a Bernedoodle will require patience and consistency. Start at an early age and begin with basic commands such as “sit” and “stay”. Work in short intervals and, if possible, break up the training periods into multiple, smaller chunks throughout the day. Keeping these sessions positive by rewarding with treats and plenty of verbal praises will help to reinforce the desired behavior. Incorporate different training tools such as clickers or hand signals to make the commands more clear. It is important to remain consistent with the training and resist backward steps.
