Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are a hybrid cross between the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Poodle, resulting in a loveable, playful, intelligent and loyal breed. The combination of the two parent breeds results in this 'designer' breed that often has a teddy bear-like appearance, as well as unique features such as low-shedding coats. Depending on the size of the Poodle parent, Bernedoodles are classified as Standard, Mini, or Toy. Typically, they stand 18 to 27 inches tall and can weigh between 30 and 80 pounds.
Managing allergies with Bernedoodles is possible with proper care and maintenance. It is important to keep your Bernedoodle's coat clean and groomed regularly. Regularly wash sheets, blankets and beds your Bernedoodle may have contact with to reduce the presence of allergens such as dander. You may also consider having an air purifier and using a HEPA filter vacuum to reduce allergens in your home. Additionally, keep any areas your Bernedoodle may have contact with free of dust and vacuum them regularly.
Bernedoodles are intelligent and sociable dogs that require a balanced diet full of nutritious, high-quality dog food. Their diet should include proteins, carbohydrates, and healthy fats, as well as vitamins and minerals. A good source of protein for Bernedoodles is things like lean meats, fish, and eggs, while a good source of carbohydrates includes grains like oats, rice, and barley. Healthy fats should come from sources like fish oil, olive oil, coconut oil, and grass fed butter.
First and foremost, it is important to ensure the new Bernedoodle has all the necessary supplies to ensure they are comfortable in their new home. This should include an appropriate sized crate, comfortable bedding, appropriate amounts of food and water, and stimulating toys. Additionally, research should be done on the Bernedoodle breed to understand their general temperament, energy level, dietary needs, and any potential training challenges they may have. This includes researching the breeders where the Bernedoodle was purchased to ensure it was a responsible one.
Bernedoodles vary in size depending on the type of Bernedoodle you have. Mini Bernedoodles usually range from 25 to 49 pounds, but many Standard Bernedoodles can weigh over 50 pounds. Therefore, while Bernedoodles are often considered medium-sized dogs, some of them definitely qualify as big dogs. The Bernedoodle is also considered a 'designer breed' because it is a mix of two pedigree dogs, a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle, bred to create a unique dog with desirable qualities.
Bernedoodles are known for their intelligence, friendliness, and lovable, playful natureso it is not surprising that many Bernedoodles also enjoy swimming in water! Traditionally bred from the Bernese Mountain Dog and Poodle, Bernedoodles inherit both breeds' affinity for and love of swimming. Swimming is a great way to exercise, and many Bernedoodles take to this activity quickly, as an outlet for their energy. Because Bernedoodles have low-shedding coats and can tolerate cold water temperatures, some can be particularly adept swimmers.
Bernedoodles are renowned for being an excellent family pup. They are intelligent, easy to train, and affectionate making it the perfect choice for families. Their combination of Bernese Mountain Dog and Poodle parentage gives them a hypoallergenic fur coat that's relatively low shed and their size means they fit into both large and small living spaces. On top of this, they are gentle around both children and other animals. Bernedoodles also experience fewer health issues than their purebred parents – a great bonus for any family.
Training a Bernedoodle requires a lot of patience and consistency. To get started, you'll want to establish good behavior and basic commands such as sit, stay, and come. You'll also want to create a routine to ensure your Bernedoodle receives enough exercise and enrichment. Positive reinforcement and rewards are key to the training process and should be offered whenever the desired behavior is exhibited. Treats, toys, and activities should be planned and structured to create a fun learning environment.
