Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are a hybrid breed of dog, created by crossing a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. They are intelligent, highly trainable, and generally have the calm demeanor of the Bernese Mountain Dog, combined with the hypoallergenic coat of the Poodle. Bernedoodles come in three sizes: Standard (over 50 pounds avg.), Mini ( 20-50 lbs avg.) and Toy (10-20 lbs avg.). Bernedoodles thrive on companionship and love to please, so it's important they get plenty of socialization and training.
Bernedoodles are considered hypoallergenic since they are a mix of Bernese Mountain Dogs and Poodles. Both breeds are non-shedding and produce less dander (which is what causes allergies) than most other breeds. Their coats may vary from wiry to soft and curly or even straight, so the texture and shedding of the coat is dependent on their genetic makeup. Bernedoodles can also receive regular tumbles and brushing in order to further reduce the allergens in their coat.
Feeding your Bernedoodle should be tailored to their individual size, age, and activity level. High-quality, nutrient-rich kibble will form the basis of their diet, and should include ingredients like lean proteins, complex carbohydrates, and healthy fats. Other proteins like chicken, beef, or fish can also be added in smaller amounts. Balance out their diet with a variety of vegetables, such as carrots, spinach, kale, and other nutrient-rich veggies. Avoid unhealthy table scraps or too much fatty treats that can lead to digestive issues, weight gain, and other health problems.
Prior to your new Bernedoodle's arrival, make sure your home is ready for a furry addition. Begin by puppy-proofing each room; check for any hazardous items and either secure them or remove them from the puppy's reach. Make sure the entire home is free of any sharp objects, poisonous plants, chemicals, or small objects that your pup could choke on. You should also stock up on basic supplies, such as food and water bowls, potty training materials, dog shampoo, a brush, chew toys, and a crate.
Bernedoodles come in a range of various sizes, ranging from miniature (weighing in at around 25 pounds or less) to extra-large (up to 90 pounds or more). The size of a Bernedoodle is determined by the size of the parents, with miniature Bernedoodles being bred from a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Toy Poodle, while larger Bernedoodles are typically produced through a cross-breeding of a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Standard Poodle.
It is important to walk your Bernedoodle every day for at least 30 minutes per day, divided up into two or three 15 or 20 minute sessions. This will not only keep your dog fit and healthy but also help to avoid any undesirable behaviors from developing due to a lack of exercise or stimulation. It is also a great way to bond with your Bernedoodle and introduce them to new sights, sounds, and smells during their walks.
Bernedoodles are extremely friendly and sociable dogs that typically get along very well with kids. They are actually known for being very nurturing and often enjoy spending time around kids of all ages. They're patient and gentle, so they're often excellent playmates for kids. Bernedoodles also tend to be quite intelligent and easily trained, so they can be taught the basics of how to behave around children. All in all, Bernedoodles make great companions for kids, and the bond that can form between them is truly heartwarming.
Training a Bernedoodle can be both an enjoyable and rewarding experience. It is important to approach the training with a positive attitude and consistent methods. There are various approaches to training, and some may be easier for you and your Bernedoodle to understand. There are also abundant resources that can assist you in training, such as training guides, professional trainers, and group classes. Establishing good communication and consistent routines with your Bernedoodle can help make training easier. Set achievable goals during training, and provide positive reinforcement, such as treats and verbal praise, when commands are followed.
