Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are a unique crossbreed of Standard Poodle and Bernese Mountain Dog. Generally, they are a very intelligent, social, friendly, loyal, and loving breed. They love human companionship and can be very easy to train due to their intelligence and eagerness to please. In fact, Bernedoodles tend to bond faster to their persons compared to other hybrid breeds. Physically, they are a sturdy, medium-sized hybrid, with an average lifespan of 10-15 years.
Bernedoodles are often considered to be a low-shedding dog breed; however, their coats vary from pup to pup. Some Bernedoodles may have a low-shedding coat that will require more frequent brushing to maintain their luxurious look, while others may have a coat that does not require brushing as often. Generally speaking, Bernedoodles possess hybrid vigor, which often results in less shedding than their Poodle or Bernese Mountain Dog parents. This hybrid vigor also often results in a healthier, longer lifespan.
A Bernedoodle is a cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle, and will require a unique blend of nutrition to provide them with the nutrition they need throughout their life. An ideal feeding plan should consist of high-quality kibble, appropriate portion sizes, and two meals a day. If possible, opt for kibble with real meat as the first ingredient, as this ensures they're getting adequate amounts of protein and other essential nutrients. You may also want to offer them a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables as occasional treats to provide them with vitamins, minerals, and fiber.
Preparing your home for a new Bernedoodle should begin by ensuring a comfortable living space for your pup. Start by baby-proofing, as Bernedoodles will naturally enjoy exploring and are likely to instinctively investigate their new surroundings. Make sure to create a safe haven for them, such as a kennel or sleeping area, for when you need alone time. Organize and secure any potentially hazardous items within your home, such as cleaning supplies or electrical cords.
Bernedoodles typically range from 30-45 lbs and 18-21 inches in size. Size may vary slightly depending on the size and proportions of the pup’s parents; Bernedoodles generally grow to be larger if both parent breeds are larger. The exact size of Bernedoodle puppies is hard to predict, so while it's possible to get an indication by looking at the size of the parents, the size of the Bernedoodle puppies often won't become certain until they are full grown.
Bernedoodles are generally quite active dogs due to their hybrid mix of the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Poodle. They typically need an extensive amount of daily activity to stay healthy, both physically and mentally. In fact, Bernedoodles should get at least one hour of physical activity every day to stay happy and healthy. They can easily accommodate walks, runs, jogs, and free play outdoors, so they can keep up with an active lifestyle. In addition to physical activities, Bernedoodles also require mental stimulation.
Bernedoodles make for excellent companions for kids as they have a lot of patience and enthusiasm around children. Their calm and affectionate personalities mean they tend to do really well in households with little ones. Bernedoodles have gentle manners and love to learn, which makes them great at following instructions from kids. Most Bernedoodles will enjoy playing with children, so the two are likely to be a great match. They have a protective nature, so it's likely to make them trustworthy around children.
Training a Bernedoodle is a commitment requiring dedication and patience. Generally speaking, it is recommended that you train your Bernedoodle for between fifteen and thirty minutes per day. This can be broken up into several smaller sessions if desired. Although this may sound like a relatively small amount of time, the consistency and dedication to teaching your Bernedoodle will be rewarded with good results. Along with regular training, daily play sessions are important for your Bernedoodle's development and the bond between the two of you.
