Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are a unique hybrid breed of dog that are a cross between Bernese Mountain Dogs and Poodles. They are a lowto non-shedding breed that requires gentle grooming and can bring a lot of joy into your life! One of the most interesting aspects of Bernedoodles is that they boast a characteristically intelligent, cheerful, and gentle disposition which makes them perfect family pets. As a result, they are relatively easy to train and can fit well into just about any home.
Bernedoodles are considered to be hypoallergenic because they are a mix of Bernese Mountain Dog and Poodle breeds, both of which are hypoallergenic. Since Bernedoodles have a non-shedding coat with low levels of dander, they are less likely to trigger allergies than other dog breeds. Furthermore, the Bernedoodle’s adaptive intelligence and temperament (combining the sociability of the Bernese with the intelligence of the Poodle) make them less likely to engage in aggressive behaviors which may cause somebody to have an allergic reaction.
While all Bernedoodles will have their own individual tastes and preferences when it comes to the best food for them, a good rule of thumb is to look for a quality brand of dog food that is designed to meet the individual nutritional needs of large breed dogs. Additionally, it's important to look for a diet that is rich in healthy animal proteins like chicken or lamb, as well as whole grains and fruits and vegetables that provide carbohydrates, dietary fiber, and essential vitamins and minerals. Also, consider any medical needs your Bernedoodle may have and choose an appropriate food accordingly.
Preparing your home for your new Bernedoodle is an important step in ensuring that the pup feels safe and secure when they arrive. Start by puppy-proofing your home, making sure all potentially hazardous items or surfaces are removed or at least made inaccessible. Consider using baby gates or crates to separate your Bernedoodle from any off-limit areas. Set up a comfortable, but durable area for your pup to sleep in and keep its food and water bowls nearby with plenty of fresh, clean water. Acquire safe toys to help with training and keep them away from potential choking hazards.
The size of your Bernedoodle puppy will depend on its parents and the type of Bernedoodle that your puppy is. Generally, a standard Bernedoodle puppy will grow to be about 23 to 29 inches tall, while miniature and toy varieties tend to be around 15 to 17 inches in height. As for weight, a standard Bernedoodle can grow up to 50 or more pounds, while minis and toys usually stay between 15 and 25 pounds.
The amount of exercise needed for your Bernedoodle will vary based on their age, size, and overall health. Generally speaking, an adult Bernedoodle needs at least one hour of activity and exercise a day, consisting of both physical and mental stimulation. A good rule of thumb is to walk your Bernedoodle for at least thirty minutes per day, combined with an additional thirty minutes of interactive play. This could include activities such as agility, fetching, or obstacle courses. Exercise is important not only for physical health, but also for mental wellbeing.
Absolutely! Bernedoodles make great family dogs. Not only are they loyal and affectionate companions, they also have the intelligence and adaptability of both the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Poodle, giving them an incredible amount of versatility and problem-solving capabilities. Bernedoodles also can be quite low maintenance as far as grooming is concerned. They make great watchdogs, yet can be trained to be incredibly friendly, docile, and socially well-mannered.
Training your Bernedoodle requires patient and consistent effort. Start by teaching him some basic commands and naming conventions, such as "sit" and "stay". Set aside time each day to reward your Bernedoodle for good behavior and give him lots of attention and positive reinforcement. As he learns the commands you've taught, move on to more complicated commands, such as "come" and "stop".
