Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are a cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. They are intelligent and social dogs with low to no shedding. Their coat is usually a combination of curly like a poodle's, or sometimes wavy hair like a Bernese Mountain Dog's. Bernedoodles can come in different sizes depending on the size of the Poodle parent. Standard size Bernedoodles will grow to be approximately 25 to 29 inches tall. Miniature Bernedoodles will grow to be approximately 18 to 22 inches.
Bernedoodles are considered to be a low-shedding or non-shedding breed. These designer dogs are a combination of two breeds that are known for their low-shedding coats: Bernese Mountain Dogs and Poodles. The amount of shedding can depend on the genetic makeup of the individual dog, but many Bernedoodles have coats that are light-shedding or even non-shedding. With proper care, including regular brushing and grooming, Bernedoodles maintain a healthy coat that reduces the amount of loose hair around the home.
Bernedoodles are friendly, active dogs that need the right nutrition to stay healthy. For optimal health, it's important to feed your Bernedoodle a top quality, species-appropriate diet with a balance of high-quality protein, healthy fats, complex carbohydrates, and other essential vitamins and minerals. You should research and choose a diet that is free of grain, corn, wheat, and soy, as these ingredients can be difficult for dogs to break down. Additionally, be sure to feed your Bernedoodle a diet that has the adequate number of calories to maintain their healthy weight.
Bernedoodles are not overly demanding when it comes to special requirements, but there are a few things to consider. This hybrid cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle can require more grooming than some other dog breeds, as their coat can become quite long and their fur is known to get tangled. Therefore, regular brushing is recommended to ensure their coat is kept healthy and untangled. Additionally, Bernedoodles need consistent activity and mental stimulation either through playing games or having toys to keep them occupied.
Bernedoodles can come in various sizes, depending on the size of their parent breeds. On average, Bernedoodles range between 18 24 inches in height and can weigh between 25 49 pounds. Certain Bernedoodles, bred from either a miniature Bernese Mountain Dog or Poodle, can be smaller in size and on the lower range of average for this breed. Though Bernedoodles may appear small in a picture or a video from a distance, one should take caution and not accidentally underestimate the size of this breed.
Bernedoodles absolutely love to swim. It is one of their favorite activities and a great way to burn off energy! They are incredibly enthusiastic when they enter the water and will happily splash around to their heart's content. Due to its double coat, the Bernedoodle tends to stay quite dry even after swimming. As with all dogs, it's important to make sure you provide plenty of towels for drying off and to supervise your pup to ensure a safe experience.
Yes, Bernedoodles are an excellent breed of dog that make great family pets. They have plenty of energy to keep up with active families, but they're also incredibly gentle and easy to train. They're also famously loyal and social, so they get along well with other pets and people, making them ideal for families. With early socialization, Bernedoodles can be great with children, as they are known to be incredibly affectionate and loving. They're also known for their intelligence, meaning proper training is essential to developing a well-mannered canine companion.
Training your Bernedoodle can be a rewarding experience, but it does require patience and consistency. Start with simple commands such as "Sit," "Stay," and "Leave it," and focus on positive reinforcement techniques such as lavish praise when your pup does something right. Gradually increase the complexity of commands and consider enrolling your Bernedoodle in a group obedience class to help with socialization and prove beneficial in general obedience training. Be sure to reward your pup with treats after successful training sessions. It's important to keep each session short and end it on a positive note.
