Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are a designer breed created by mixing the Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. They are not recognized as a specific breed by the American Kennel Club, however, their unique characteristics make them a very sought after pet. Bernedoodles vary in size depending on the proportions of Bernese Mountain Dog and Poodle used in breeding. Generally, they will have a wavy or curly coat of medium to long length. Height can range from small to large but will usually weigh between 50 and 80 pounds.
Bernedoodles are generally considered to be low-shedding, hypoallergenic dogs. Because they are a hybrid breed, their exact shedding qualities can vary from one Bernedoodle to the next; however, the mix of Bernese Mountain Dog and Poodle makes for a breed that is typically classified as low-shedding and low maintenance in terms of brushing and grooming. High quality nutrition should be given to Bernedoodles as this can help prevent hair loss and reduce shedding. Regular brushing and occasional professional grooming can also help to reduce and control shedding as much as possible.
Bernedoodles are an inherently healthy breed and generally have fairly basic dietary needs. Their diet typically should consist of good-quality poultry, grains, cereals, fresh fruits and vegetables, and a commercial diet that contains whole grains and is low in sugar. Always consult with your veterinarian for their unique health needs and any special dietary requirements they may have. Bernedoodles may require higher amounts of omega-3 fatty acids to maintain healthy skin and coat, and may also benefit from specific supplements to help ensure they are getting everything they need.
Becoming the best puppy parent while waiting for your Bernedoodle requires a lot of preparation. To start, read up on the breed's specific needs and traits. You'll want to create a safe and comfortable home environment for your pup before they get home. Ensure you accessorize your pup’s space with comfortable bedding and plenty of toys. Also, create a solid routine for your pup that involves regular meal times, cage training, regular exercise and plenty of playtime.
Bernedoodles come in a variety of sizes ranging from toy size (approximately 10-25 lbs) to giant size (around 100 lbs). Size is based on the Bernese Mountain Dog parent's size; smaller Bernedoodles typically have a Toy or Mini Poodle parent, while larger Bernedoodles may have a Standard Poodle parent. Smaller Bernedoodles make great companions for people living in apartments, while larger Bernedoodles may be better for an outdoor home with more space.
Bernedoodles absolutely love to swim! While the parent breeds, Bernese Mountain Dog and Poodle, have a history with water, Bernedoodles may find a passion for swimming. With their thick, waterproof coat and athletic build, Bernedoodles are capable of spending loads of time in the water. Moreover, due to their need for exercise and their reputation for being one of the most intelligent breeds of dog, swimming can provide an outlet for this energy. It can also be a great opportunity for gaining physical and mental stimulation.
Bernedoodles are excellent with children! Highly intelligent and affectionate, Bernedoodles can quickly learn the boundaries that come with being around children. Their easy-going and social nature make them great family pets, and they don’t bother easily. Bernedoodles get along with other animals and people of all ages and have great stamina which makes them great playmates with the kids. They also tend to form strong bonds with children, often becoming their loyal and protective protector.
An appropriate amount of Bernedoodle training time per day will vary greatly depending on the age and level of development of your Bernedoodle. Generally, a good guideline would be at least 10 minutes each day. Puppies usually need more training, requiring at least 15 minutes for dogs aged 3-6 months, and longer sessions as the pup matures. Older dogs may require less training if they have already learned the basics.
