Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are a unique breed of dog that have become increasingly popular in recent years. These pups are a cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle, making them a hybrid of two of the world’s most beloved dog breeds. Though only recently recognized as a breed, these dogs boast some very interesting facts. For starters, Bernedoodles are considered to be a hypoallergenic breed since they naturally possess the non-shedding trait of the Poodle.
Bernedoodles vary in their shedding levels just as any other breed of dog. Some may be considered to be non-shedding or minimal shedding, while others might have more of a shedding coat. A great way to tell if a Bernedoodle is a non-shedding variety is to look at its parent breeds. The Poodle side will often be the recurring trait of low shedding. Generally, a Bernedoodle with a tight-curled coat (also known as an F1B) is more likely to be non-shedding.
Bernedoodles have moderately sized energy needs so their diet should consist of a balanced mix of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates that are appropriate for their age. Generally speaking, Bernedoodles do not have specific or unusual dietary needs; however, they do have some nutritional requirements that must be met for their health and wellbeing. High quality, whole food sources, such as chicken, beef, fish, eggs, and whole grains, are necessary for a Bernedoodle’s diet in order to provide them with the relevant vitamins and minerals they need.
Becoming the best puppy parent before getting your Bernedoodle is easier than you think! Start by researching the breed so you can be familiar with their size, energy, health needs, and grooming. Once you have a basic understanding of the Bernedoodle's needs, start making a list of supplies and a budget for those items. Make sure you research reputable breeders, and socialize your new pup with people and other puppies. Puppy classes are an excellent way to get your pup off on the right foot.
The size of your Bernedoodle puppy will depend on several factors, including the size of their parents and their own growth rate. Bernedoodles typically fall into one of three size categories: miniature (15-30 lbs), medium (30-45 lbs) and standard (over 45 lbs). If both parents are standard size, the puppies could be even larger. Even if you know the size of the parents, it is impossible to predict the exact size of your Bernedoodle puppy. Generally, you can expect them to reach their mature size around 12-18 months of age.
Absolutely, you can take your Bernedoodle running! Bernedoodles have an average exercise requirement of around an hour a day, depending on age and size. Running could be a great way for both of you to get the exercise you need and to bond together. Make sure to take safety precautions, such as wearing reflective clothing and keeping your Bernedoodle on a leash. Also, consider starting with shorter running sessions and gradually increasing the distance. Your Bernedoodle should always be monitored to make sure they're not excessively tired or overheating.
Bernedoodles can make wonderful family dogs! They are usually very loyal to their families, eager to please, and get along well with children and other pets. Bernedoodles are also typically gentle, intelligent, and have low to moderate exercise needs. With proper training and socialization, they can grow up to be well-rounded dogs that make great companions. Bernedoodles also have a playful personality that makes them a great fit for active families. All in all, Bernedoodles can be great additions to any loving home!
Training Bernedoodles can be both fun and challenging. The exact amount of time per day needed is dependent upon the individual animal, their age and their overall experience. Generally, you should plan on dedicating at least 30 minutes of focused training with your Bernedoodle each day. This can be split up into 10-15 minute sessions throughout the day. Focus on basic commands, manners, problem solving and socialization to help your Bernedoodle develop a strong foundation for learning.
