Bernedoodles are a relatively new designer breed developed by crossing a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. They come in varying sizes, from Standard Bernedoodles, to Miniature, to Toy, to Tiny sizes. Generally speaking, Bernedoodles are considered to be a huge plus for families looking for a loving and loyal companion. They are typically very mellow and affectionate, and the Poodle influence gives them an extra dose of intelligence.
Bernedoodles are usually considered to be relatively low-shedding dogs due to the poodle parentage. However, they are not 100% non-shedding, as some parents will still carry shedding genes. In side-by-side comparisons, you can expect the Bernedoodle to shed far less than its Bernese Mountain Dog parent, and many owners find that daily brushing, and even some occasional trips to the groomer, are sufficient in controlling the coat and any shedding.
Bernedoodles are certainly lovable and loyal companions, but like all dogs, they need a healthy diet that is appropriate for their age and activity level. As their owner, it's important to be knowledgeable about what should and shouldn't be part of their diet. Avoid feeding your Bernedoodle table scraps, as this can lead to unbalanced nutrition and unhealthy behaviors. Additionally, many human foods can also be toxic to Bernedoodles, such as grapes, onions, chocolate, and raisins.
Before welcoming your new Bernedoodle into your home, it is important to make sure that your home is a safe and comfortable environment. Start by checking for any hazards that may harm your pup, such as cords or fragile items that can be chewed or knocked over. Make sure to block off areas such as the stairs, ensuring that your pooch does not accidentally harm themselves. Providing a comfy area such as a dog bed with a blanket and a few toys can also increase the comfort levels of your pup.
Bernedoodles are known for their impressive size and can range from medium to extra-large. Generally, a Bernedoodle will be at least 18 inches tall and weigh anywhere from 30-65 lbs when full grown. The size will depend on the type of Bernedoodle a toy or miniature Bernedoodle will typically be much smaller than a standard Bernedoodle. Miniature Bernedoodles will usually measure 15-17 inches at the shoulder and weigh 17-25 lbs when fully grown.
Generally speaking, Bernedoodles require activity and exercise to stay healthy and content. For this reason, the recommended amount of walks needed on a daily basis is around 30 minutes. This includes both potty breaks and other longer walks. It's also important to ensure that during these walks your Bernedoodle is able to run freely and/or play with other dogs in order to achieve adequate physical and mental stimulation. 30 minutes is the recommended amount of time for a Bernedoodle, however, more exercise would benefit them.
Bernedoodles are adored by many for their adorable appearance and affectionate nature, and they make a great breed for families with kids. Their amicable and laid-back temperament generally makes them excellent companions for children of all ages. Bernedoodles are patient, loving, and tend to form strong bonds with young ones. They are loyal, energetic, and can often times be easily trained.
