Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are a hybrid breed created by cross-breeding a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. They are a designer breed that are popular due to their sweet temperaments and low-shedding coats. They can be either Standard, Mini or Toy size with the Toy size being the rarest. Bernedoodles require a moderate amount of exercise and attention and are generally easy to train. They can be very loyal and make excellent family companions, although they do need a super tolerant guardian as they may sometimes be overly rambunctious in their enthusiasm.
Bernedoodles are often referred to as being non-shedding due to the fact that their breed is a cross between a poodle and a Bernese Mountain Dog. While these hybrid dogs will not shed as much as other breeds, they will still require some grooming and coat maintenance as they have double coats, meaning they have fine, soft fur underneath and coarser fur on top. Bernedoodles also should be brushed regularly and bathed at least a few times each year to ensure that their coats remain free of tangles.
Knowing what not to feed Bernedoodles is crucial for their health and safety. The best way to ensure that you are nourishing them correctly is to consult with their veterinarian for dietary recommendations. Additionally, unsupervised access to table scraps or other human food should be kept to a minimum, as these items often contain unhealthy ingredients and can ultimately lead to health concerns. Make sure to double-check labels for any unrecognizable ingredients, as some pet food items might contain substances that are toxic to your Bernedoodles.
Preparing for a new Bernedoodle can be a fun and fulfilling experience that will benefit both you and your dog. Start by researching the breed and its characteristics, such as its size, shedding potential, energy level, and dietary needs so you can purchase the right supplies and accommodate your dog's needs. Make sure you have a secure, comfortable, and safe place in your home for the Bernedoodle to live, such as a crate, dog bed, or area of the home that you can designate as their own.
Bernedoodles are considered to be medium to large sized dogs, with mature adults typically ranging in size from 25 to 50 pounds. Males tend to be slightly larger than Females. Adult Bernedoodles usually stand between 18 to 24 inches tall, and have a relatively square stature. Although the Bernedoodle is not a Toy breed, they do not reach the size of a Giant breed. As such, they are generally considered to be a 'big' breed that may be lived with in an apartment setting as well as a larger home.
Bernedoodles are energetic, affectionate, and intelligent dogs that need plenty of physical and mental exercises to thrive in their environment. Depending on the age of the Bernedoodle, anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours of exercise per day is recommended. Younger Bernedoodles can usually do a long walk, a rigorous game of fetch, or off-leash dog park playtime. Older Bernedoodles need more moderate physical activities like leash walks, short hikes, playing in the backyard, or pup swimming.
Bernedoodles make excellent family dogs! Their combination of the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Poodle make them highly intelligent, sociable, and extremely loving companions. Bernedoodles can be easily trained, so an active family that engages with their pup will find that they make truly wonderful additions to their family. They are also easygoing and friendly, making them great around children. They are usually great with other animals, too, as long as they are socialized early, and are great for apartment living.
Training your Bernedoodle should be a fun, rewarding process for both you and your pup! First, its important to remember that the early months are a crucial window for learning and developing good habits. Start by introducing basic commands such as sit, stay, come and lay down, having treats on hand to reward your pup for their successes. Additionally, praise is key; show your pup love and positivity when they obey a command or complete a task. Remain patient when working with your pup and keep sessions short and sweet.
