Bernedoodles are one of the most unique and interesting dog breeds out there! They are a hybrid breed, formed by crossing a Bernese Mountain Dog with a Poodle. This combination of two amazingly loving and affectionate breeds make for a perfect family dog, with a lifespan of up to seventeen years! Not only are Bernedoodles very intelligent and easy to train, but their coats are low-shedding and hypoallergenic, making them ideal for people with pet allergies.
Bernedoodles can cause allergies in some people; however, it really depends on how much dander, fur, and other allergens are released from the animal. Allergens can be released through skin or through saliva when the animal licks itself. Bernedoodles can have different coats depending on the genetics of the parent breeds, therefore some might release lower levels of allergens and not trigger allergy attacks as much as others.
Bernedoodle puppies should receive a diet consisting mostly of high-quality kibble and/or wet food made with natural ingredients, specifically designed for growing puppies. It's important to look out for foods that are rich in carbohydrates, proteins and essential vitamins, minerals and fatty acids. It's also important to remain mindful of the size of meals, starting with smaller portions and increasing in size as the pup grows. As they reach adulthood, adding fresh vegetables and fruits can help to provide additional dietary benefits.
Yes, Bernedoodles have some special requirements to keep them healthy and happy. They need to be brushed regularly to keep their coats free of knots and tangles, especially the long-haired variety. Additionally, Bernedoodles need plenty of regular exercise and mental stimulation to keep them fit physically and mentally. Socialization is also important, as is regular nail clipping and dental care. If you have a Bernedoodle, you need to take them to the vet once a year for checkups and vaccines, as well as regular deworming and flea prevention.
Bernedoodles are not typically considered to be a small breed of dog, though their size can vary. Typically, a full-grown Bernedoodle can range from 25 – 45 pounds and 20 – 26 inches tall at their shoulder. Depending on their breeders, some Bernedoodles may be bred to stay smaller than others, such as mini Bernedoodles which focus on keeping the weight to under 25 pounds. Training Bernedoodles is a fun and rewarding experience, however it does take time and dedication. Depending on the age of your Bernedoodle, that time can be divided up into two shorter sessions, such as 15-30 minutes for basic commands and obedience practices and another 15-30 minutes for exercise and socializing. The amount of time needed to train your Bernedoodle will also depend on how fast your pup learns and how willing they are to learn commands.
