Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are truly an extraordinary breed of canine. They are highly intelligent, exceedingly loyal and incredibly easy to train. They also boast beautiful coat combinations, usually consisting of black, white and brown patches. Furthermore, Bernedoodles have hypoallergenic coats, which make them ideal for those sensitive to pet hair. Most notable and alluring is their uniquely loving and affable personalities, as Bernedoodles exhibit attachment to their owners which are comparable to that of a teddy bear.
Bernedoodles are not considered to be a completely hypoallergenic breed of dog. While they may not trigger the same allergic reactions as more traditional breeds, their coat is a mix of Poodle fur and Bernese Mountain Dog fur, which can lead to some level of allergic reaction in certain individuals. Generally, owners of Bernedoodles report that their allergies tend to be more manageable when compared to other breeds. For those with allergies, their best chance of managing their allergies may be to try out a Bernedoodle before making a decision to bring the pet into their home.
Knowing what not to feed Bernedoodles is important in order to keep them healthy and happy. Bernedoodles should not have chocolate, grapes, avocados, cat food, garlic, onions, nuts, or any food containing xylitol. Additionally, the diet of Bernedoodles should always consist of healthy homemade or commercial food that is specifically formulated for dogs. Lastly, make sure you consult a veterinarian regarding safe and healthy treats for your Bernedoodle. Keeping these dietary restrictions in mind is key to your pup's health and safety.
Becoming the best puppy parent while waiting for your Bernedoodle starts before you even have the pup. Research to understand the breed's behavior to anticipate the puppy's needs and wants. Gather all the supplies and accessories you will need for your pup's arrival, such as crates, leashes, food, and toys. Get comfortable with puppy training so it will be simple for you to teach good behaviors right away. Start setting aside a regular time to groom your puppy too.
While Bernedoodles come in various sizes, from tiny toy Bernedoodles to the larger jumbo Bernedoodles, they are generally classified as medium-sized dogs. Depending on the size of their Bernese Mountain Dog and Poodle parent, a Bernedoodle can range from about 25 to 70 pounds, making them large enough not to be considered small. However, their size makes them ideal for many families, as their stature is not intimidating or overly large for the average home.
Every dog breed has different exercise requirements, but most Bernedoodles need at least an hour of physical activity on a daily basis. If you're just starting out, aim for 30 minutes of walking every day, and then gradually build up to 45-60 minutes over the course of a few weeks. Keep in mind that Bernedoodles can tire out quickly if over exercised in one session, so it's important to build up their exercise tolerance gradually.
Bernedoodles absolutely get along with kids! They are intelligent, gentle, and cheerful pets that are eager to develop a strong bond with their owner’s family. Bernedoodles have a happy disposition and love to be around people, especially children, and they are known for their willingness to please. As a result, they make excellent family dogs, providing the perfect combination of playfulness, loyalty, and affection. The fact that they can be easily trained further adds to their desirability as a pet.
It depends on your Bernedoodle's individual needs and lifestyle. Generally speaking, you should plan to spend at least 30 minutes per day actively engaging with your Bernedoodle, engaging in activities such as teaching basic commands, playing, walking, hikes, agility drills, and more. This will help keep them mentally stimulated, bond with them, and keep them physically active which will help keep them healthy. It's also equally important to spend time each day providing the Bernedoodle with emotional reassurance, reassurance that they are loved and a part of your family.
