Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are a cross between Bernese Mountain Dogs and Poodles and are often referred to as "designer dogs". Bernedoodle puppies can range in size from small to very large, depending on their parents' sizes and genetics, and typically have wavy or curly hair. They are often good family pets, as they are loyal, friendly and easy to train. In addition to being great family companions, they are also said to be very intelligent, often enrolling in agility classes and even becoming guide dogs for the visually impaired.
Bernedoodles are a designer breed that have been developed from a cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. While Bernedoodles generally don't shed as much as other breeds, there are no guarantees that they will not produce allergens that could cause allergic reactions. It's important to understand that all dogs can cause allergies, even the most low-shedding, hypoallergenic breeds.
Bernedoodles are generally healthy and have a diet similar to many other medium sized dogs. However, there are certain foods that should be avoided to maintain a healthy lifestyle for your Bernedoodle. Some human foods that should not be given to Bernedoodles include chocolate, onions, garlic, nuts, avocados, and grapes. Also, certain snacks, such as bones, can be a choking hazard as they can easily splinter and cause internal injury, so they must be avoided.
Bernedoodles have unique requirements that should be taken into consideration prior to adoption. Due to their hybridized nature, with both Bernese Mountain Dog and Poodle genetics, they do require more time and attention to certain aspects of their care. A Bernedoodle should be groomed and trimmed frequently, typically every 6-12 weeks, and good nutrition is also imperative. Daily physical and mental exercise is essential for Bernedoodles to remain healthy and happy. As intelligent creatures, they do require a lot of mental stimulation and can quickly develop destructive behaviors if not given enough attention.
Bernedoodles come in a variety of sizes, often ranging from miniature to standard depending on the type of breeding. Miniature Bernedoodles are typically around 25-49 pounds, while standard Bernedoodles generally range from 50-90 pounds. Additionally, there is a so-called ‘toy’ Bernedoodle size that weighs in at approximately 10-24 pounds. While this is not a ‘standard’ size, some breeders do offer this size.
Bernedoodles can be active dogs, depending on their parents' genetics, temperament, and individual level of exercise needs. They can require more exercise than an average dog due to their heritage, which includes the Poodle and Bernese Mountain Dog breeds, both of which need a good amount of activity. Training and socialization play a very important role in giving Bernedoodles the proper outlet for their energy.
Absolutely! Bernedoodles are popular with families due to their loyal, affectionate nature, intelligence and low-shedding qualities. They are also easy to train and have a great temperament, making them the perfect four-legged companions. Bernedoodles typically thrive when given the proper amount of attention, exercise and socialization with both people and other pets. Parents will appreciate their ability to quickly form a strong bond with the kids and even look to them for companionship, making them ideal guardians of the home.
Training your Bernedoodle is a great way to build a strong bond between you and your pup. The most effective way to accomplish this is to be consistent with your commands and expectations. Start with basic commands such as "sit," "stay," "come," "down," "off," etc. You can teach your pup these commands by repeating them during training sessions. Additionally, use positive reinforcement when your pup follows a command, like offering tasty treats, a favorite toy, verbal praise, or a belly rub.
