Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are a hybrid or designer breed of dog, created by combining the Bernese Mountain Dog with the Poodle. Unlike other purebred dogs, Bernedoodles do not have a specific classification, yet they are often considered to be part of the larger “doodle” or “doodle mix” breed group, which includes Labradoodles, Goldendoodles, Aussiedoodles and many others. They have enjoyed growing popularity in recent years due to their loving nature and outgoing disposition.
Bernedoodles are in fact relatively low-shedding dogs. As a crossbreed, they will inherit some of the qualities from each of their parent breeds a Poodle and a Bernese Mountain Dog. Poodles have hypoallergenic coats which do not shed and will generally pass on this trait to Bernedoodles, making them an ideal low-shedding breed. However, some Bernedoodle coats may be more similar to the Bernese Mountain Dog parent breed, which does shed.
It is important to know what not to feed Bernedoodles in order to ensure a healthy diet and prevent digestive or other issues. Generally, Bernedoodles should not be given table scraps, processed foods, high sugar content, raw meat, bones, or any food with artificial preservatives, flavors, or additives. It is always best to consult your vet for a list of approved foods to feed your Bernedoodle. Feeding a well-balanced diet of quality food and treats designed specifically for Bernedoodles will keep your pup healthy and happy.
Preparing for a new Bernedoodle requires both physical and mental preparation. Physically, ensure you have the right supplies, such as a proper bed, food, food and water dishes, grooming tools, toys, treat, and an identification collar. Mentally, make sure you are prepared to potty train, socialize, and offer lots of love and attention. Additionally, acquaint yourself with Bernedoodle behaviors and mannerisms and research the breed’s specific health concerns.
Bernedoodles come in several sizes, making it challenging to classify them as either small or large dogs. Generally, Bernedoodles range from mini to extra-large depending on their parents' sizes. Mini Bernedoodles tend to weigh 15-30 pounds, while standard Bernedoodles usually weigh between 40-80 pounds. Whether a Bernedoodle can be considered small or large dog depends on the size of the individual dog and its breed.
Bernedoodles, being highly energetic, need a substantial amount of exercise in order to stay healthy and happy. They require daily activity to prevent boredom and destructive behaviors. The amount of exercise recommended depends on when the Bernedoodle is in its life cycle. Puppies will need shorter walks and games throughout the day while adults should get at least 30-45 minutes of vigorous exercise on a daily basis. It's also important to remember to provide mental stimulation by engaging in activities like obedience training, agility training, and tracking.
Bernedoodles are known as a loving, loyal, and friendly breed that often get along very well with children. They make great family pets as they are good-natured and typically enjoy being around people and kids alike. Bernedoodles also tend to be very intelligent, making them quick to learn the rules and manners of their family, and helping them relate to small children. That said, as with any dog, early and consistent socialization and training will play an important role in a Bernedoodle's relationship with children.
Training your Bernedoodle requires consistency, patience, and positive reinforcement. It is important to start small and build up as your pup learns. Begin with basic commands such as sit, stay, and come. Give your Bernedoodle lots of love and praise as they learn. Spend time each day going over commands and rewarding success with a treat or favorite toy. Socialization is also important for Bernedoodles. Gradually introduce them to different environments, people, and animals. Make sure to reward good behavior and ignore bad behavior.
