Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are a designer crossbreed made up of a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. These unique pups blend the intelligence and hypo-allergenic coat of the Poodle with the gentle, family-oriented temperament of the Bernese Mountain Dog. Bernedoodles come in three sizes: Standard, Miniature, and Micro Miniature, and their colors and markings vary between pups. They have the long snouts and smiling faces of Bernese Mountain Dogs, and they typically have fluffy coats and slightly wavy hair.
Bernedoodles are quite unique! These adorable crossbreeds typically have a smooth, curly, or wavy coat that's often low-to-non-shedding. Due to their hybrid nature, Bernedoodles may take after either their Bernese Mountain Dog or Poodle parents in their coat-type and texture. The average Bernedoodle has a combination of both parents' coats, with a coarse outer coat and soft undercoat.
Bernedoodles do have special dietary needs that need to be taken into consideration. They are usually prone to obesity, so it is important to monitor the amount and type of food they are eating. They also require a balanced diet of proteins, healthy fats, carbohydrates, and other essential vitamins and minerals. It's best to feed Bernedoodles premium quality dog food, as this provides them with the most beneficial nutrients. Additionally, their diet should not be restrictive without professional guidance and should include treats in moderation.
You can become the best possible puppy parent while waiting for your Bernedoodle by doing plenty of research! Spend time learning about Bernedoodle behaviors and health-related care, so you can be prepared for any situation when you do finally bring your pup home. Spend time also researching dog trainers, puppy classes, and even other Bernedoodle owners who may have experience. Additionally, organizing puppy supplies and gathering toys and other items to give to your pup when they arrive is a great way to give them the best first impression.
Bernedoodles are considered to be on the larger side in terms of dog breeds. Generally, a fully grown Bernedoodle can weigh anywhere between 25 and 90 pounds and can stand between 16 to 30 inches tall at the shoulder, depending on the mix of parent breeds involved. Some may even be significantly larger. This means that Bernedoodles can range from being as big as a small to medium-sized dog, such as a Border Collie, to something larger, like a standard-sized German Shepherd.
Bernedoodles are very active dogs that need regular exercise and stimulation. Typically, these dogs thrive when they have a job to do and a lot of physical and mental stimulation. Unlike some breeds, Bernedoodles are relatively low maintenance when it comes to their activity level, as they don't require continuous long walks. They are also great with children and love to play all sorts of games. Bernedoodles have a moderate to high energy level and should have some form of physical activity, like jogging, hiking, or swimming, on a daily basis.
Bernedoodles certainly can make great family dogs! To start, they are an extremely intelligent and loyal breed, making them easy to train and eager to please their owners. They also have high levels of energy, so frequent walks or other activities help ensure they do not get bored or develop destructive behaviors. They are friendly and sociable, making them great companions, and can even be patient and gentle with children. However, it's important to take into account the Bernedoodle's size when deciding if it's the right dog for your family.
Training your Bernedoodle requires patience, consistency, and lots of positive reinforcement. To get started, set aside a time every day to work on basic commands such as sit, stay, and come. When first teaching a dog to obey commands, provide consistent and immediate rewards for an action done correctly. Reward the desired behavior with treats or verbal praise. Make sure to keep each training session short and interesting to keep your Bernedoodle from becoming discouraged. During training, it’s important to be patient and remain consistent with your commands.
