Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are an interesting breed of hybrid dogs that are a combination of Bernese Mountain Dogs and Poodles. They are a cross between the two breeds, inheriting characteristics of their parents, including their intelligence, loyalty, and friendly personality. Perhaps the most interesting thing about Bernedoodles is that they can vary in size depending on what type of Poodle is used for breeding, and also whether or not the breed is firstor second-generation. Bernedoodles can be either standard, medium, or miniature size.
The Bernedoodle coat is a unique mix of the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Poodle, giving this hybrid breed a wonderfully soft and curly coat. The Bernedoodle coat can be short, medium, or long, with many variations in color. Most have black feathers on the legs and feet, and many coats also have white markings on the face, chest, and belly. They tend to not shed much, and coat colors can range from gold, black, brown, and cream. The coat is usually thick and plush, and some even have a teddybear-like appearance.
Bernedoodles, like all dogs, require special attention when determining their diet. To keep your Bernedoodle healthy and happy, it's important to understand what foods and ingredients are not suitable for them. Avoid giving your Bernedoodle any chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, yeast dough, avocado, or macadamia nuts, as they are all toxic to the breed. Additionally, foods with a high fat content, such as bacon or fatty meats, should also be avoided, as they can lead to digestive issues.
It's great that you're looking forward to bringing a Bernedoodle into your family! Becoming the best puppy parent you can while you wait depends on taking the time to properly prepare. Research breeds so you can determine the exercise, dietary, and training needs of your future pup. Get necessary supplies in advance, such as food, a bed, bowls, and toys, so they're ready after you bring your puppy home. Additionally, brush up on positive reinforcement training and get your house ready for the arrival of your newest family member by puppy-proofing.
Bernedoodles come in a variety of sizes, some small and some large. Generally, the smaller sizes come from crossing a Bernese Mountain Dog with a Toy or Miniature Poodle. Usually, the smallest of these Bernedoodles, which are a mix of both breeds, reach about 12 to 17 inches in height at the shoulder and weigh 30 to 50 pounds. This size is considered a smallto medium-sized dog. Although they are small, they possess a powerful energy and are suited for an active lifestyle.
Bernedoodles need a significant amount of exercise to stay healthy and happy. While the amount of exercise depends on a variety of factors such as age, size, and energy level of the individual dog, most require at least an hour of exercise per day. This should include both mental and physical activities, like brisk walks, hikes, playing fetch, and obedience training. For Bernedoodles with extra energy, it's important to provide additional activities like agility or swimming, as these activities require more energy and help burn it off.
Bernedoodles are widely recognized as being one of the most loving and loyal family dogs with an excellent temperament around children. They are a perfect companion for a child and often form strong bonds with kids quite easily. Bernedoodles are also incredibly intelligent, which allows them to understand and respond to children quite well. With proper training and socialization, Bernedoodles get along with kids nicely and often enjoy engaging in playful activities with them, such as fetch and cuddles.
Training a Bernedoodle requires consistent, regular time every day. The amount of time needed will depend on the individual dog's learning goals and current level of obedience. Generally speaking, the more time you can devote to training your Bernedoodle, the better. Daily practice will ensure that your Bernedoodle is fast to respond to commands and work with you. As a daily guideline, it is recommended that Bernedoodle owners ensure their pup receives at least twenty minutes of focused training per day, but more may be beneficial depending on individual needs.
