Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are an increasingly popular designer breed that are a mix between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. These loyal, intelligent, and playful dogs come in three sizes: Standard (approx. 50-90 lbs), Medium (approx. 30-50 lbs), and Mini (up to 30 lbs). Bernedoodles can be easily trained and adapt well to apartment living but do best with a yard to run around and expel energy. They are also low-shedding and do not require intense grooming, making them a great choice for people with allergies.
Bernedoodles are not considered hypoallergenic due to their mixed heritage. A Bernedoodle is a hybrid dog that is a mix between a Bernese mountain dog and a standard poodle, thus making it difficult to predict the exact source of potential allergens. Although certain breedings may produce a Bernedoodle with less dander on the coat, all dogs will still produce some dander. Those with allergies should take the necessary precautions to reduce their exposure to the dander as much as possible.
Determing what to feed Bernedoodle puppies is an important part of their care. Bernedoodles should not be fed human table scraps, rawhides, or pig's ears, as they are not the most nutritious for your pup. They should primarily be fed a balanced diet consisting of high-quality dog food. It's important to pick a food that is age appropriate and that agrees with your puppy's unique digestive system. Stick to balanced, high-quality food formulated for your pup's age and activity level.
Becoming the best puppy parent for a Bernedoodle starts before your pup even arrives. Set aside time to research Bernedoodles and learn what makes them unique and special. Feeding, grooming, housing, and health needs can vary greatly between breeds and individuals, so it's important to understand your pup's needs in order to give them the best care. Additionally, begin to formulate a training plan that incorporates positive reinforcement. Doing research on various training techniques and getting your home ready to welcome your puppy will help you become the best puppy parent.
Bernedoodles are generally a medium to large sized breed, so the size of your puppy will depend largely on which of the parent breeds it takes after more. Toy Bernedoodles are the smallest variety, and typically have a standard full-grown adult weight of about 10-24 pounds. Mini Bernedoodles usually reach a full-grown size of 25-49 pounds, with Standard Bernedoodles typically climbing to 50 pounds and beyond. Of course, specific size information will not be available until your puppy reaches adulthood.
It really depends on the age, size, and energy level of your Bernedoodle. Generally speaking, it's recommended to provide at least 30 minutes of exercise, preferably in two 15-minute increments, each day. Taking them for a brisk walk or jog is the best way to get the necessary amount of exercise. If you live in a colder climate or experience poor weather, an area for playing fetch or a few games of tag can help to provide an equivalent amount of exercise.
Bernedoodles are an excellent family dog, due to their combination of the intelligence, loyalty and friendly temperament of a Poodle with the calm, relaxed and social nature of a Bernese Mountain Dog. They are typically great with children, seeking out physical contact and attention from family members. Bernedoodles thrive in family settings with plenty of space to move about freely, and they often do well with other pets. They are eager to please and highly adaptable, making them easy to housebreak and train.
Training your Bernedoodle begins with establishing a routine. Set specific feeding times and locations, as routine helps to create structure. Make sure to include potty training as part of this routine, providing plenty of opportunities for your Bernedoodle to go outside. Positive reinforcement is key when it comes to training; reward your Bernedoodle with treats and verbal praise when they exhibit desired behaviors. Socialization is also important; your Bernedoodle should get comfortable around other people and pets. Start slowly, by introducing them to just one or two new people at a time.
