Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are a very interesting breed of dog. They are a cross between two breedsBernese Mountain Dogs and Poodleswhich results in a unique set of characteristics that make them stand out from other breeds. Bernedoodles have a charming and loyal personality, while also being incredibly intelligent. As a hypo-allergenic breed, they are particularly sought-after for people with allergies. Further, Bernedoodles come in various sizes, so you can find one to fit your lifestyle, whether you prefer a smaller or bigger size.
The Bernedoodle coat is highly varied, depending on the breed combination of the parent Bernese Mountain Dog and parent Poodle. Generally, they have a softer, wavier coat than a Bernese Mountain Dog, with the texture and color of a Poodle, ranging from solid colors to merles. It is usually medium length and can be either corded or brushed to keep it looking its best. Bernedoodles need brushing and grooming a couple times per week, with regular trims to keep the coat from becoming matted.
Bernedoodles, like all dogs, benefit from being fed a diet made up of quality, nutritious pet foods befitting of their age and activity level. While Bernedoodles do not necessarily require a special diet, some Bernedoodles are more sensitive to ingredients, allergens, and other dietary requirements than others, and may require a more bespoke diet. If your Bernedoodle appears to be having sensitivities or digestive issues, or if there are diagnosed health conditions, you should absolutely consult with a vet before implementing changes to your dog's diet.
Yes, Bernedoodles do have certain requirements. Generally speaking, they are a low to no-shedding hybrid breed that requires regular brushing, clipping of nails, and brushing of teeth. Some may require an occasional professional grooming, or extra brushing during shedding cycles. Just like any other dog, Bernedoodles need sufficient exercise and playtime, mental stimulation, positive socialization, a healthy diet, and plenty of love and affection. Bernedoodles tend to obtain their exercise through regular trips to the dog park or by being taken for a walk twice daily.
Bernedoodles come in a variety of sizes depending upon the breed of the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Poodle that are in the parenting pair. A Standard Bernedoodle is bred with a Standard Poodle and typically are between 25 and 30 inches tall and weigh anywhere from 50 to 100 pounds. A Mini Bernedoodle is bred with a Miniature Poodle and will usually mature to be between 16 and 25 inches tall and weigh between 25 and 49 pounds.
Bernedoodles need quite a bit of exercise to stay healthy and happy. Their energy level can depend on the size and age of your Bernedoodle, but most will need at least 30-60 minutes of exercise per day. This could include walks, jogs, or other types of exercise such as retrieving, agility or swimming. As with any other breed, mental stimulation is just as important as physical exercise, so don't forget to challenge your pup's mind with games and puzzle toys. Ultimately, your Bernedoodle's activity level needs to meet their individual needs and abilities.
Bernedoodles can make wonderful family dogs. They have a mixture of traits from their parent breeds (the Bernese Mountain Dog and Poodle) that can make them good companions for a variety of households. Bernedoodles are often gentle, friendly, and obedient, and as long as they get enough exercise and socialization they can be great with children and other pets. They are also usually reasonably intelligent, so they are easy to train. Bernedoodles can thrive in a variety of living situations, from small apartments to large homes.
Training Bernedoodles is not an exact science; the amount of minutes needed to train them per day will vary depending on the dog's age, personality, and the desired outcome. Generally speaking, experts advise that you spend about 10 to 15 minutes a day on consistent training with your Bernedoodle. This includes activities like teaching basic commands, reinforcing acceptable behaviors, or introducing new tasks.
