Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are a hybrid breed that combines a Bernese Mountain Dog with a Poodle, resulting in a very playful and affectionate pup! They are extremely smart and loyal, sometimes cutely stubborn, making them a breeze to train if you have the patience. They require quite a bit of grooming, with their coats needing regular brushing and trimming. Despite being a larger breed, they are relatively low energy and only require moderate exercise and a good nap here and there.
Bernedoodles have long, shaggy coats that are a blend of the coats of both its parent breeds. They tend to share more in common with their Bernese Mountain Dog parent in terms of coarse textures, though individual pups can lean one way or the other. They can be full or wavy, and can come in a variety of colors ranging from black, white, brown, tan and silver. Generally, Bernedoodles don’t require a ton of grooming, though they do shed on occasion.
Bernedoodles are highly intelligent, loyal pups who typically eat a balanced diet of quality dog food supplemented with natural meals. High-quality dog food should cover essential vitamins and minerals needed to support physical health, while natural food can provide fresh proteins and grains to keep your Bernedoodle happy and full. These can include lean meats like boneless chicken, turkey, lamb, or beef; cooked eggs; plain, unsweetened yogurt; cheese; and fresh fruits and veggies, including apples, celery, sweet potatoes, and blueberries.
Getting ready for a new Bernedoodle means preparation both emotionally and practically. You want to make sure the pup feels safe, loved, and welcomed into your home. Physically, you should start by purchasing all the necessary items such as food dishes, a bed, toys, a leash, and a collar. You will also want to start researching basic obedience training and agility. You may want to decide if you are using a crate and where you will store it.
Bernedoodles come in three size variations: Standard (over 50 pounds), Miniature (15 to 50 pounds), and Toy (less than 15 pounds). Every hybrid is different but generally, the Standard will reach heights of 24 to 29 inches or more at the shoulders while the Miniature will stay between 18 to 24 inches. The Toy sizes range from 10-12 inches. Weight depends on the Bernedoodle's parentage, with some being heavier than others. They also can have a wide range of coat styles, textures, and colors, depending on the coat type of the parents.
It is important to make sure that your Bernedoodle gets the recommended amount of daily exercise. The amount of exercise that your Bernedoodle should get depends on their age, health, and any pre-existing conditions that they may have. Generally, walking your Bernedoodle for at least 30 minutes per day is recommended for adult dogs and around 60 minutes per day for puppies. In addition to walking, you should also incorporate other forms of play and exercise into your routine, such as short bursts of running, fetch, agility exercises, and playtime in a fenced-in area.
Bernedoodles have a wonderful, gentle, and easy-going temperament which make them a great choice for first-time owners. Their uniquely adaptive nature allows them to adjust easily to different environments, making them adaptable to different kinds of living situations. Bernedoodles are smart and eager to please, making them relatively easy to train. That, combined with their intelligence and loyalty, makes them relatively easy for first-time owners to manage.
Training Bernedoodles is very important to ensure they grow up to be well-behaved and obedient dogs. Although the exact amount of time needed to train your Bernedoodle every day will depend on the breed type, age, and personality, a general guideline would be to plan for 30 minutes of quality training per day. This could include activities such as teaching basic obedience commands, providing mental stimulation to keep them engaged, or taking them for a leisurely walk.
