Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are a hybrid of Bernese Mountain Dogs and Poodles. They are an active, intelligent, and friendly breed that loves to be around people and other pets. They excel in obedience and agility training and are known for being good family dogs, as well as great companions for people with allergies. Bernedoodles come in a variety of colors including black, white, brown, red, grey, and sable. They can have either short or long coats and they do not require a lot of grooming.
The Bernedoodle coat can vary depending on the type of Bernedoodle you own. Generally, they have soft and curly fur, and the poodle part of the breed contributes to the curly coat. The Bernese Mountain Dog part of the breed contributes to the thicker, coarser coat. Depending on the generation of Bernedoodle, their coat may range from short to long and wavy or even straight. The coats of Bernedoodles tend to be low (or non) shedding, hypoallergenic, and require minimal maintenance.
The best way to know what not to feed your Bernedoodle is to look at the ingredients list of the food you're planning to give them. Avoid food containing unusual proteins such as animal by-products or artificial coloring and flavoring. As a Bernedoodle eating a diet of highly processed foods, make sure the food you are giving them is nutritionally balanced and has plenty of protein and fiber. Additionally, consult with a trusted veterinarian for a full list of foods and treats that should be avoided, as different breeds and individuals may have dietary restrictions.
Before getting a Bernedoodle, it's important to have the right items on hand. Access to quality food, plenty of water, a sturdy and comfortable bed, chew toys, a brush, and grooming supplies are all essential. Don't forget extras like flea and tick preventatives and a collar or harness for walking. You'll also need safe areas for your pup to play and do their business, such as a securely fenced backyard or other space, and an appropriately sized crate to use while you're away.
Bernedoodles are a hybrid crossbreed of a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle, so depending on which breed is used for the cross, you may find Bernedoodles that come in size ranging from tiny Toys to the extra-large Standards. Typically you can expect your Bernedoodle to fall into the sizes of Small, Medium, or Large. Small Bernedoodles usually stand at about 12-17 inches and weigh between 15-30 lbs. Medium Bernedoodles usually stand at 18-22 inches and weigh between 30-45 lbs.
Generally speaking, the amount of exercise that is right for your Bernedoodle will depend on its age, size, and overall health. A good rule of thumb is to aim for at least one hour of exercise a day, ideally split into two or three shorter walks. For young puppies, 3 or 4 short walks per day are appropriate as they can tire quickly. As your pup grows, you can gradually increase the length and frequency of their walks over a period of time.
Bernedoodles can make great dogs for first-time owners, as they are highly intelligent, loyal, affectionate, and easily trainable due to their hybrid nature. They tend to form strong bonds with their owners, and are friendly and gentle enough to interact with children. They are also relatively low maintenance, with minimal grooming needs, which makes them the perfect choice for new owners. Bernedoodles are also praised for their good health and consistent temperament, making them a great dog for first-time owners just starting their journey into pet ownership.
Bernedoodles have a reputation for being highly intelligent and loyal dogs. Generally, they are known for being eager to learn, easy to train, and friendly with people of all ages. They typically excel in activities such as agility, tracking, and obedience competitions. Bernedoodles have proven themselves to be competent problem solvers, learning how to open lids and doors in order to gain access to food or treatsthey may have been denied. With their loving and loyal nature as well as their ability to learn, Bernedoodles make fantastic family companions.
