A Bernedoodle is a designer cross breed dog created by breeding a Bernese Mountain Dog with a Poodle. This combination of two breeds produces a hybrid that is known for its intelligence and loyal, affectionate temperament, as well as its low-shedding hypoallergenic coat. Bernedoodles can come in red, black, brown, white, cream, black & tan, sable, brindle, and merle coat varieties.
Bernedoodles are known for their hybrid look, possessing soft, thick, and wavy coats. Their coats are typically hypoallergenic and vary in color from black, brown, and white with gray highlights. Longer haired birds, such as Poodles, tend to have wooly, wavy coats. While Bernese Mountain Dogs tend to have shorter haired, more manageable coats. On average, Bernedoodles have a medium to long length coat and require brushing a few times per week.
Bernedoodles are incredibly intelligent and active dogs, so they require good-quality dry kibble with natural ingredients to fuel them throughout the day. However, it's important to keep in mind that no two Bernedoodles have the same dietary needs, as some may require slightly more protein in their diet than others. Additionally, Bernedoodles may also benefit from occasional treats such as cooked vegetables, boiled eggs, fruits, and meat. In all cases, it's important that treats are given in moderation and balance with the kibble food.
Preparing your home for a new Bernedoodle starts with gathering all of the necessary supplies. Consider purchasing items like a dog bed, toys, a food and water bowl, an ID tag, leashes, grooming supplies and a pet gate. It's also a good idea to puppy-proof your home, blocking off areas that may be dangerous and having all electrical cords and wires stored out of reach. Additionally, Bernedoodles need plenty of exercise, activity, and mental stimulation.
Bernedoodles, the much sought after hybrid of a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle, vary greatly in size. Generally, they can grow to be anywhere from 25 to 29 inches tall and weigh between 50 to 90 pounds depending the size of the parental dogs. Mini Bernedoodles reach from 12 to 17 inches in height and weigh 18 to 35 pounds. Micro Bernedoodles are the littlest and usually measure 10 to 15 inches tall and can weigh between 8 to 18 pounds.
Bernedoodles are considered highly active and energetic dogs and require more daily exercise than some other breeds. Generally speaking, they need around two 30-minute brisk walks, or 45 minutes to an hour of general activity each day. However, it's important to keep in mind that exercise requirements for each Bernedoodle may vary due to size, age, health, and activity level. If possible, walks should be supplemented with periods of off-leash activity such as running, playing, or swimming.
