Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are a hybrid breed of dog that is created by crossing Bernese Mountain Dogs and Poodles, making them an incredibly unique and interesting breed. In terms of appearance, Bernedoodles have the calmness and intelligence of the Poodle, with the size, strength and playfulness of the Bernese Mountain Dog. They are known for being incredibly smart and friendly they make excellent family pets and are good with children and other pets. They also require relatively little grooming, are good to train, and are easy to take care of as they love to please their owners.
The Bernedoodle coat is usually made up of curly, wiry, and slightly shiny hair. The texture varies according to the ratio of Bernese Mountain Dog to Poodle ancestry, but generally they have a soft, thick feeling that is not as smooth as other breeds. The amount of shedding depends on the type of coat, although they do still shed to some degree, making them easy to keep neat and groomed. They come in several varieties of coat colors, including solid black, shiny and dark chocolate, tan and cream, and merle.
Bernedoodles typically eat a combination of whole grains, vegetables, fruits, and proteins. They may also need added supplements like glucosamine, omega-3 fatty acids, and probiotics. As with all dogs, it's important to research and understand the dietary needs of a Bernedoodle, and to provide them with the right balance of foods to ensure their optimal health. Feeding your Bernedoodle two meals a day, with a quality dry food designed specifically for their breed as the base of their diet, can provide them with the nutrition they need.
Preparing for a new Bernedoodle can be an exciting yet daunting process. To ensure your pup's transition to their new home is as smooth as possible, it's important to ensure you are prepared in advance. Start by making sure you have all the necessary supplies such as a comfortable bed, food and water bowls, toys, grooming items, a crate and everything else they may need. Familiarize yourself with Bernedoodle welfare and training tips to ensure you are able to help your pup acclimatize and make sure you take the time to introduce them to their new home gradually.
Bernedoodles are hybrid dogs that are a cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. While they can come in various sizes depending on the type of poodle used in the breeding, they are typically considered medium-sized dogs. Most Bernedoodles generally weigh anywhere from 40 to 80 pounds, and measure 18 to 28 inches tall at the shoulder. That said, one can find Bernedoodles bred with Toy or Miniature Poodles which tend to be smaller, falling into the toy-dog range.
The amount of time you walk your Bernedoodle each day should be based on their activity level and age. Generally, a Bernedoodle requires an hour or more of activity daily that could be broken up into several shorter walks. For a puppy, the walks should last only five to 15 minutes to prevent straining the joints, muscles, and tendons, while adult Bernedoodles can walk for a bit longer. It's recommended that a Bernedoodle get at least 30 minutes of exercise per day with a mix of on-leash and off-leash activities.
Bernedoodles are an excellent fit for families due to their affectionate nature, intelligence, and loyal personality. These dogs are great with children too, as they can provide endless amounts of snuggles and love. Bernedoodles generally have a low shedding coat, so they are a great choice for families with allergies as they don't trigger many allergic reactions. Bernedoodles also tend to be good watchdogs, as they are alert to any new presence or sound in their environment.
Training your Bernedoodle should be an enjoyable experience for both you and your pup. Start by establishing clear communication with your Bernedoodle. Let them know what behaviors are expected and which behaviors are unacceptable. You can begin by using verbal commands such as "sit", "stay", and "come" as well as hand signals. Be consistent and rewarding with treats to encourage positive behaviors. You should also incorporate structured play time for your Bernedoodle and move slowly when introducing stressful situations. As your pup progresses, add more complex tasks and environments for them to explore.
