Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are a type of hybrid dog that are a cross between Bernese Mountain Dogs and Poodles. This is a relatively new breed and was first developed in 2003. These dogs have the best of both worlds, inheriting the intelligence and good natured characteristics of the Poodle, combined with the loyal, playful and friendly traits of the Bernese Mountain Dog. The Bernedoodle is considered a “designer” breed and they range in size, depending on the size of their parent dogs.
Bernedoodles are known for being hypoallergenic, meaning that they have minimal shedding and produce less pet dander than other breeds of dogs. However, everyone's allergies and sensitivities are different, so it's impossible to guarantee that a Bernedoodle will not cause any allergies. It is recommended to spend some time with a Bernedoodle before committing to the breed to see if any reactions occur.
Feeding your Bernedoodle a high-quality, nutritious diet is essential for their health and wellbeing. We recommend a diet of premium holistic or grain-free kibble, as well as fresh fruits and vegetables. It's important to research the right food and type of diet for your Bernedoodle puppy. If you opt for a commercial kibble, look for ones with natural ingredients, no preservatives, and all-wholesome proteins. You should also consider providing treats and supplements as part of your Bernedoodle's diet.
Bernedoodles, like all other breeds of dogs, have some general requirements that must be met in order for them to live a healthy life. They require daily exercise, mental stimulation, a balanced diet, regular baths, and proper grooming to keep their coat in good shape. Additionally, Bernedoodles can require brushing a couple of times a week, to help prevent any tangles and mats, and they must be trimmed regularly. It’s also important to keep them on flea and tick prevention as the fleas can live in their thick coats.
Bernedoodles come in a variety of sizes. The size of the Bernedoodle will depend on the size of the Poodle parent and the Bernese Mountain Dog parent. Mini Bernedoodles can range in size from 18-35 pounds and typically stand 12-17 inches tall at the shoulder, while Standard Bernedoodles usually range from 45-90 pounds and stand 18-26 inches tall at the shoulder. Some Bernedoodles, such as the Giant Bernedoodles, can reach sizes of over 100 pounds and 30 inches tall at the shoulder.
Bernedoodles can be great swimmers, as they are a popular hybrid breed that has inherited traits from both the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Poodle. Typically, Bernedoodles are high energy, and they enjoy activities like swimming. Some may even love to run along the shoreline or jump into the water after a ball or toy, though as with any activity, it is important to ensure that the activity is safe and appropriate for your Bernedoodle's age and energy level.
Bernedoodles can make excellent family dogs, as they are known for their playful and affectionate nature. They are also very intelligent and adaptable dogs, able to fit into any lifestyle. Bernedoodles are social dogs and get along well with children, other pets, and strangers making them a great all-around family pet. They are also very loyal and often form strong bonds with their owners, enjoying activity and snuggles just as much as quality playtime. Bernedoodles are known to be generally healthy and have a life expectancy of up to 16 years.
The amount of time you need to dedicate to training your Bernedoodle will depend on their age, breed, and overall disposition. Generally speaking, adult Bernedoodles should receive at least 30 minutes of dedicated training time each day. Puppies need more frequent and shorter sessions, so you may want to aim for at least an hour of training per day for a young Bernedoodle. Keep in mind that this training includes walks and playtime, in addition to basic obedience commands and tricks. Also, make sure you have several short training sessions throughout the day as opposed to one long session.
