Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are an increasingly popular crossbreed, the result of crossing a Bernese Mountain Dog with a Poodle. They are known for their affectionate personalities, their intelligence, and their low-shedding coats. Bernedoodles are a loyal breed, often devoted to their humans, and generally make great companions. Bernedoodles can come in a variety of sizes, colors, and coat types, ranging from standard to miniature or toy-sized. Due to their hybrid nature, Bernedoodles are generally healthier than many other breeds, often living longer lives.
The Bernedoodle coat is typically medium in length and sheds minimally, making it ideal for those who have allergies or sensitivity to dander. Its texture can range from wavy to curly and may even look shaggy on occasion. Generally, the Bernedoodle has colors that range from black, white, brown, and grey. The coat's texture is often tightly curled or wavy, but can be straight as well.
Bernedoodles are active, intelligent, and inquisitive, and so their diet should reflect that. A correctly balanced diet will provide them with the nutritional requirements they need to stay healthy and strong. A Bernedoodle's diet should involve a variety of fresh ingredients including lean proteins such as chicken or turkey, a variety of vegetables, and limited amounts of complex carbohydrates such as brown rice. It's also important to ensure that your Bernedoodle's diet includes essential fatty acids and vitamins and minerals from fruits, vegetables, and grains such as oatmeal, quinoa, and other whole grains.
Bernedoodles have some unique requirements due to their size and breed. Like all dogs, Bernedoodles require a diet that consists of high-quality dog food that has been specifically formulated to meet their nutritional needs. They should also have regular exercise, which can include short walks or an activity such as playing fetch. Dogs of any breed need some form of mental stimulation, since a lack of mental stimulation can lead to boredom and can lead to problem behaviors. Bernedoodles in particular need to have an outlet for their active and intelligent personalities since the breed is so smart.
Bernedoodles are considered medium-sized dogs. Their size depends on their parent breeds, which are the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Poodle. Bernedoodles typically range from 45 to 85 pounds, being larger than most 'small' dogs and smaller than most 'large' dogs. Typically Bernedoodles that are bred with a Standard Poodle, as opposed to a Miniature Poodle, will reach the upper end of that range.
Generally, Bernedoodles should get at least 30 to 60 minutes of exercise each day. A reasonable amount would be 45-60 minutes per day. Still, it can vary from one Bernedoodle to the next depending on their age, breed, and size. Puppies will usually require shorter walks, while more mature dogs can handle longer walks. A rule of thumb is to make sure your Bernedoodle gets enough exercise that they have calmed down when it's time to settle in for the night.
Bernedoodles are often excellent pets for families or individuals with children. Not only does their hybrid size make them ideal for low-maintenance households, but their friendly, affectionate nature also tends to make them wonderful companions for children. Bernedoodle puppies have an eagerness to please that fosters trust and confidence. They also have the intelligence to understand commands, which means they can easily be trained not to jump or to bark excessively. The breed is very patient and gentle with kids even in their most playful, energetic times.
Training a Bernedoodle is relatively straightforward. The key is to be consistent in your approach and use positive reinforcement whenever appropriate. Begin by instilling basic commands like Sit, Down, and Stay. It is important to reward your Bernedoodle with a treat each time they obey a command. This will help reinforce the desired behavior, so they know when they are behaving well. As the dog progresses, start to intersperse verbal commands and nonverbal cues to signal the same thing.
