Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are a cross between Bernese Mountain Dogs and Poodles. They are considered a hybrid, often referred to as a designer breed. Bernedoodles are highly intelligent, making them highly trainable, and they usually get along very well with kids and other pets. Depending on their parent breeds, Bernedoodles come in three different sizes: standard, miniature, and toy. Their coats range from wiry and tightly-curled to soft and wavy, and they come in a variety of colors, including black, white, brindle, and sable.
Managing allergies with Bernedoodles is possible, albeit challenging. To minimize the allergic reaction, it is important to bathe your Bernedoodle regularly, groom their coat on a regular basis, and brush their teeth to reduce bacteria present in their saliva. While being careful to not over-bathe your Bernedoodle, use hypoallergenic or low-allergen shampoo and conditioner that won’t further irritate your allergies. Vacuum regularly, especially in the area where your Bernedoodle regularly resides to remove allergens.
Bernedoodles typically eat a high-quality dry kibble designed to meet the needs of a large breed. It's important to always select a food that is formulated for the size and age of your Bernedoodle. Additionally, a balanced diet should include a variety of snacks that are both nutritious and delicious. Choose crunchy treats like biscuits, bones, and chews that are made specifically for dogs and include a mix of animal proteins, fruits, and vegetables.
Preparing for your new Bernedoodle should include researching the breed to ensure that you understand the needs and temperament of the breed. Begin gathering supplies, such as food and water bowls, a dog bed and collar, grooming supplies, and a crate for when you need to leave your Bernedoodle. Establish an exercise and potty routine that offers appropriate amounts of exercise and relieving moments. Make sure to socialize your Bernedoodle so it is comfortable in different situations and with other people and animals. Consider enrolling in obedience classes so that your pup learns good behaviors.
Bernedoodles generally come in three different sizes, depending on the size of their parents Standard, Miniature, and Toy. The Standard Bernedoodle can range in size from 23 to 29 inches in height and reach between 60 and 100 pounds; the Miniature Bernedoodle is typically a bit smaller, measuring between 18 and 22 inches tall and weighing anywhere from 25 to 49 pounds; and the Toy Bernedoodle reaches heights of 10 to 17 inches and weighs as little as 10 pounds, going up to 24 pounds.
Bernedoodles are typically energetic and enthusiastic dogs who love the water, so most Bernedoodles enjoy swimming. Not only will they enjoy going for a dip, swimming is also a great form of exercise and helps strengthen the Bernedoodle's muscles, joints, and cardiovascular system. So if you have access to a body of water, like a lake, pond, or pool, your Bernedoodle may be a great water buddy! Be sure to provide a life vest to ensure your pup can always swim confidently.
Yes, Bernedoodles can make wonderful first-time pets for individuals or families. Known for being child-friendly and loyal, Bernedoodles are highly intelligent, often enjoy learning commands, and have lowto non-shedding coats, making them a great match for families looking for a playful pet that is also hypoallergenic. Additionally, Bernedoodles are typically friendly and outgoing; with proper socialization they can become a friendly companion for a variety of family gatherings.
Bernedoodles require training, but the exact amount of time you devote to it can vary based on your pup's age, temperament, and individual needs. Typically, it's recommended that you commit to training your Bernedoodle for at least 10-15 minutes each day. This alone will help them learn basic obedience lessons and effectively reinforce good manners. Depending on how quickly your pup learns, you can work up to longer periods, like 20-30 minute sessions. Keep in mind that regular repetition and consistent reinforcement are key in transforming your Bernedoodle into a happy, well-trained pup.
