Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are a popular designer breed of hybrid between Bernese Mountain Dogs and Poodles. They are usually very social, friendly, and loyal dogs that love to play and be around people. Bernedoodles need regular exercise and mental stimulation to thrive. They often have a good sense of humor and may be goofy at times. These loyal canine companions can range in size from toy to standard and may weigh up to 100 pounds with a life expectancy of around 12-15 years.
Bernedoodles have been bred specifically to tout the best traits of both Bernese Mountain Dogs and Poodles, this includes the low-shedding coats of the Poodle which makes them a great choice for non-shedding or hypoallergenic canines. Bernedoodles are composed sometimes of a standard Poodle which will yield a more consistent non-shedding coat where F1B bernedoodles are bred with a Bernese Mountain dog and Poodle combination offering a more predictable non-shedding potential.
The Bernedoodle is a unique breed of dog, and as such, there are some foods that should be avoided to keep them healthy. Start by researching the breed, as the Bernedoodle tends to have a sensitive stomach and may have a difficult time digesting certain foods. Additionally, foods high in sugar or fat should be avoided, as they can lead to obesity and other health problems. Be sure to consult with your veterinarian before feeding any new food to your Bernedoodle. Stick to dog food specifically formulated for a Bernedoodle’s digestive system.
Becoming the best puppy parent while waiting for your Bernedoodle can be a rewarding experience. Research the breed and identify any potential breed specific issues. Learn as much as possible about nutrition, basic training, general health care and grooming. Establish puppy-proof boundaries in your home and create an area exclusive for your puppy and their items. Put together a puppy supplies list including a crate, bed, food, toys, grooming items, and treats. After your Bernedoodle arrives, be consistent with commands, rewards, and correction.
Bernedoodles are considered mid-sized or standard-sized dogs. Depending on the breed, Bernedoodles may range from 20-30 pounds. The size of Bernedoodles also depends on the type of Poodle used in the hybrid: toy, miniature, or standard. If a standard-sized Poodle is used, the resulting Bernedoodle could be upwards of 70 pounds. So when it comes to Bernedoodles, there is no one-size-fits-all as there are many different breed combinations that can result in puppies of various sizes.
Bernedoodles need lots of exercise, especially due to their high energy level and intelligence. Exercise for these dogs should include daily runs, long walks, playing fetch, or other activities like agility or tracking that build muscles and stimulate their minds. To ensure a Bernedoodle stays in top physical and mental condition, they need at least 90 minutes of exercise every day, divided between activities that involve physical and mental exercise. If possible, try to plan two shorter walks rather than one longer one, since Bernedoodles need an outlet for their energy throughout the day.
Bernedoodles can be an excellent choice for first-time dog owners. Their combination of the calm and affectionate nature of the Bernese Mountain Dog with the intelligence and obedience of a Poodle makes them well-rounded, easy to train, and adaptable. Bernedoodles are also typically low-shedding, so they don't require much hair maintenance. Furthermore, due to their size, Bernedoodles take up less space compared to other breeds, making them easier to manage for first-time owners.
Training your Bernedoodle is an important part of being a pet owner. The best way to start is by setting up a schedule and remaining consistent with it. Your Bernedoodle may display behaviors that show they are feeling anxious or stressed, so it is important to create an environment that is safe and free from distractions. Positive reinforcement is a great way to reward your Bernedoodle for desired behaviors. Treats, toys, pet-oriented activities, and verbal praises are great ways to exercise their minds and bodies.
