Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are a designer hybrid breed of dog created by crossing a Bernese Mountain Dog with a Poodle. This combined breed is known for being highly intelligent, social, and loving companions for families, as well as low-shedding and suitable for mild to moderate activity. Bernedoodles are also considered to be hypoallergenic due to the Poodle's coat, which is a major draw for those with allergies. They're a relatively new breed and are considered to be part of the "doodle" family with Labradoodles and Goldendoodles.
Depending on the Bernedoodle, they may not be completely non-shedding, but they are considered to have low shedding tendencies. Bernedoodles are hybrid crosses between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle; while Bernese Mountain Dogs do tend to shed, Poodles are hypoallergenic, and the hybrid combination usually results in a lower shedding coat for the Bernedoodle. Furthermore, not all Bernedoodles are created equal.
Knowing what not to feed your Bernedoodle is essential in order to ensure their health and safety. To keep your Bernedoodle healthy, avoiding any food that contains a lot of sugar, artificial additives, corn, salt, and wheat. Also, stay away from foods such as onions, garlic, avocado, and chocolate as these can be toxic and cause serious health problems. Items that are typically okay for dogs in moderation include boiled chicken, lean beef, cooked eggs, cottage cheese, raw vegetables, and some types of fish.
Bernedoodles are comparatively low-maintenance and don't require too much care and grooming compared to other dog breeds. They can be active and require regular exercise, so owners should plan for plenty of outdoor activities. Bernedoodles also need socialization with other pets and humans to help them stay adjusted and friendly. Additionally, they require daily brushing and should be bathed every four to six weeks. Specific dietary needs must also be considered when caring for a Bernedoodle; high-quality kibble should be chosen carefully to suit the dog's age and level of exercise.
Bernedoodles come in a variety of sizes. The most common size is a large-breed Bernedoodle, which typically reach heights of 24-29 inches and weigh 70-90 pounds when fully grown. Mini Bernedoodles can typically reach between 12-17 inches in height and weigh around 25-49 pounds when adult. There are also toy Bernedoodles which will be even smaller, reaching heights of 10-14 inches and weighing 10-24 pounds when adult.
As with any dog breed, the amount of exercise your Bernedoodle needs depends on its age, size, and health. Generally, a Bernedoodle should get at least 30 minutes of exercise per day. This can be in the form of walks, hikes, or playtime at home. If your Bernedoodle has energy to spare, it's perfectly fine to exercise for longer than 30 minutes per day. An important factor to consider is how energetic your Bernedoodle is. Some may require more intense exercise, while others will be content with a leisurely stroll.
Bernedoodles are often an excellent choice for a family dog. They are renowned for their friendly and loyal natures, and they thrive in a home where they are given plenty of love and attention. Bernedoodles make active, loving companions that are great playmates for children, as their gentle nature makes them tolerant of rough play. As Bernedoodles are a cross breed, they are usually healthy and have a lower chance of developing genetic disorders compared to many other breeds. Additionally, they often have mild temperaments, so they are relatively easy to train.
The amount of time you need to invest in training your Bernedoodle will depend on a number of factors such as their age, level of prior training, and any prior behavioral issues. As a guideline, it is generally recommended to spend at least 15 minutes per day in training activities. This can include basic obedience commands, teaching tricks, and providing mental stimulation. If your Bernedoodle is a puppy, it is important to invest more time each day to ensure they are taught the basic principles of good behavior.
