Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are a designer breed created from a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. The Bernedoodle is intelligent, loyal, and affectionate. They often have a playful personality and can get very attached to their owners, making them excellent companions. Bernedoodles typically weigh anywhere from 25 to 50 lbs and reach an adult height of 15-30 inches. The Bernedoodle is a low-shedding hybrid breed, meaning they require regular brushing and grooming.
Bernedoodles are not known to be hypoallergenic because all dogs produce some degree of dander, which is harmful to those with allergies. Bernedoodles do have a lower dander production than other breeds due to their hypoallergenic parents (Poodle and Bernese Mountain Dogs), but this does not mean they are completely allergen-free. It is best for people with allergies to visit and observe a Bernedoodle in person to gauge the reactions to their own allergies.
Bernedoodles are hybrid pet dogs with a combination of Bernese Mountain Dog and Poodle parents. As a result, they can have dietary requirements that may differ from their purebred parents. Generally, Bernedoodles should be fed a high-quality diet low in grains and fillers and not overly-processed. Depending on their activity level and size, they may benefit from frequent meals throughout the day of around one to two cups of dry dog food, split into two servings.
Before getting a Bernedoodle, you'll want to stock up on some essential items. First, you'll need a comfortable and cushioned dog bed that provides enough space for your pup to lie down and stretch out. Be sure to also get some food and water bowls that can easily be cleaned. You’ll need a collar and leash for walks and regular outdoor exercise. Invest in some toys to keep your Bernedoodle active and entertained, including tug-of-war and chew toys.
Bernedoodles can reach a wide range of sizes due to their hybrid nature, since they are a mix between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. The standard Bernedoodle will usually range anywhere from 22 to 29 inches tall and will usually weigh between 50 and 90 pounds. The Miniature Bernedoodle will usually range from 18 to 22 inches tall and typically weigh in the range of 25 to 49 pounds. The Toy Bernedoodle typically ranges from 10 to 15 inches tall and usually weighs between 10 and 24 pounds.
Absolutely! Bernedoodles are a special breed of dog that thrive with both physical and mental stimulation. Taking your Bernedoodle out for regular runs can provide them with the necessary exercise and attention they need for a healthy and happy life. Make sure to give them plenty of time to rest and hydrate while you are running. It is also important to begin slowly with shorter distances and build your way up to longer distances to prevent your Bernedoodle from becoming overworked.
Bernedoodles are a wonderful family companion. They are friendly, intelligent, and loyal, making them excellent playmates for children. Because Bernedoodles are relatively low-shedding, many families with allergies find them to be a great fit as well. Due to their guard-dog heritage, they can be alert and loyal in their protection of their families and may be cautious around strangers. That said, socializing your Bernedoodle early on can help to ensure that they are comfortable in new environments and with new people.
Training your Bernedoodle can be a challenge, yet a rewarding experience. Start by understanding your Bernedoodle's breed traits, needs and temperament. Get familiar with positive reinforcement training techniques and utilize rewards that will capture your Bernedoodle's interest and willingness to learn. Utilize short training sessions (no more than 10-15 minutes) to promote quick success and positive attention. When teaching basic obedience and commands, keep the commands clear and precise and always use the same words when offering the commands. Consistency is key when establishing trust and a successful learning experience.
