Questions & Answers
A Bernedoodle is a hybrid breed of dog developed by crossing a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. The combination of the two breeds results in a low-shedding, intelligent, and hypoallergenic companion that many love. Bernedoodles come in three sizes, mini, standard, and tiny toy, and they usually have wavy or curly fur coats and friendly, outgoing personalities. They are often very affectionate and keen to please their owners, making them a great family dog. Some even excel at sports such as agility and flyball.
Bernedoodles are not considered hypoallergenic. While they do usually have lower shedding coats, they can still trigger allergy symptoms. Allergens from their fur and dander can cause symptoms like itchy, watery eyes, sneezing, a stuffy nose, wheezing, and/or asthma. In addition, these hybrids may contain saliva proteins from their regular grooming that can worsen allergies. It's best for allergy sufferers to consult their doctor and research different breeds before committing to anything.
Your Bernedoodle should be fed a high-quality diet with real meat at the base. Ideally, two-thirds of their diet should be a main protein source like lamb, poultry, or fish with the other third composed of vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. Make sure the kibble you are feeding is age and size appropriate, as Bernedoodles can grow to large adult sizes. It is also important to provide them with a wide variety of nutrient rich foods to ensure they receive all the vitamins and minerals they need.
Before getting a Bernedoodle, there are some important items that you should consider purchasing. Firstly, a large, secure dog crate is essential to keep your Bernedoodle safe in your home. Secondly, you should invest in quality dog food, as well as fresh water, bowls and snacks. Thirdly, consider purchasing supplies like cheek retractors, grooming brushes and ointments to help in the grooming process. Additionally, some type of durable dog bed is essential for comfort, while toys can help keep your Bernedoodle entertained and mentally active.
Bernedoodles come in an array of sizes, and the size that is right for you will depend on a variety of factors. Generally, Bernedoodles can range in size from simply small or toy, to standard. Traditionally, the smallest Bernedoodles would be the Toy size, ranging from 10-14 inches tall and 10-24 pounds. The Mini size can range from 14-17 inches tall, and 24-49 pounds. The Standard size can range from 17-23 inches tall and 50-90 pounds.
Absolutely! Bernedoodles have ample amounts of energy, making them especially fit for taking running. However, you should always take into consideration the age, health, and athletic potential of your Bernedoodle before taking them for a run. It's also important to gradually increase the duration and intensity of the run if you plan on taking them for long distances or more aerobic exercise. Be sure to take water for both of you as well as any necessary medical items. If you follow these recommendations, then taking your Bernedoodle running should be a fun and safe experience.
Yes, Bernedoodles generally get along very well with kids. They are an excellent family companion and typically enjoy playing with kids. Bernedoodles are loyal and eager to please, so they will often go along with whatever activities your family enjoys. They make great playmates thanks to their gentle nature and intuitive understanding. With early socialization and training, Bernedoodles can learn appropriate behavior and be a great addition to any family.
Training a Bernedoodle is an important part of creating a well-mannered pet. Begin by teaching basic commands such as 'sit', 'stay', and 'come', as these will help you control your Bernedoodle's behavior. Establish a consistent routine and reward your pup for obedience by giving them their favorite treats. Make sure to positively reinforce good behavior in order to keep them motivated. When introducing new commands, focus on one at a time and practice them in different environments.
