Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are part of the Toy Group of Dogs according to the American Kennel Club. This small breed is well-recognized for its large, round eyes and its floppy ears. The Cavalier is an active, yet gentle companion who is friendly with everyone, very adaptable to house and family life, and highly companionship-oriented. While their average lifespan is on the shorter side compared to other dog breeds (typically 9 to 14 years), Cavaliers are known for being healthy dogs that love to play and snuggle for a good portion of the day.
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has a beautiful and luxurious coat that comes in a variety of colors, including black and tan, ruby, black and white, and even tricolor. The coat is moderate to long, silky, wavy and flowing, and the texture is soft and velvety. This breed does well with regular brushing and occasional bathing and should be groomed to preserve its healthy coat. The Cavalier's eyes are large, round, and wide set, giving them an intelligent and beautiful expression.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels enjoy an omnivorous diet like most other breeds of dog. A combination of premium, high quality, commercially prepared dry kibble and fresh table food, such as lean meats, fresh vegetables, and dairy products, is the best way to provide a complete and balanced diet. This breed may prefer soft moist food because some of their teeth may be missing or they may be in some other way unable to chew dry food. Very important inado avoid giving your Cavalier sugary treats and table scraps, as these can lead to health issues.
Before you bring your new Cavalier King Charles home, it is important to make your house a safe and comfortable living environment for your pet. Start by puppy-proofing your home by clearing ledges and other dangerous areas from where he may jump and accidentally injure himself. Provide a bed in a quiet area, such as a bedroom, away from guests and other potential distractions, and ensure that there are no hazardous items nearby. Make sure you have all the necessary supplies for your new pup, such as a collar, leash, food and water bowls, and chew toys.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are in the "toy" dog breed category, so they are considered to be one of the smaller dog breeds. Their average height is between 12-13 inches and they typically weigh between 13-18 pounds. While small in size, they still have a big heart and make great companions. Despite their size, these dogs do require adequate exercise and do best when given positive reinforcement during training sessions. When properly socialized, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels can make great family pets.
Walking a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel should be a part of your daily routine. Generally, you want to aim for about 20-30 minutes per day, if possible. Start slow and gradually work up to longer, brisker walks as your companion becomes more comfortable. This breed tends to be quite energetic and may begin to suffer from boredom or anxiety if they don't expend their energy. If your daily schedule doesn't allow for a full walk per day, try two or three shorter walks throughout the day or break the walk up into two parts.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are an excellent breed choice for first-time owners because they typically have an easy-going temperament and are relatively low-maintenance. They are not overly energetic, so they won't require lengthy daily exercise or an extensive training regimen. However, they are intelligent and just need guidance and consistency to maintain basic obedience commands. The Cavalier is also an ideal companion as they are extremely loyal and love to be around their owners. They are usually quite affectionate with both family members and guests.
Training a Cavalier King Charles can be challenging but also rewarding. In order to successfully manage and train a Cavalier King Charles, you must be consistent, patient, and have a solid understanding of positive reinforcement techniques. Even though they are known to be one of the more sociable breeds, they still require structure and boundaries. You will need to put time into helping them learn basic commands such as sit, stay and fetch, but also other skills like crate training and teaching them to respect the boundaries of their space and that of other animals in the home.
