Questions & Answers
One of the most interesting things about Cavalier King Charles is its rich history. It was originally bred by Edward I in the Middle Ages and was considered a symbol of loyalty. Since then, the breed has become a popular pet, known for its outgoing and affectionate nature. Its flowing coat and deep eyes have even made it a star of the show circuit, in addition to being a beloved companion pet. This breed also has an active lifestyle, which includes sporting, agility, and obedience trials, which make it an ideal choice for the activity-oriented family.
The Cavalier King Charles coat is a beautiful and take-noticeable blend of the classic spaniel look. It is usually medium to long-haired, but can be slightly wavy or even straight in texture. It has feathering on the ears, chest, legs, and tail that tends to be wavy and profuse. The breed is naturally born with a variety of colors, the most well-known being the Tricolor, Blenheim, Ruby, and Black and Tan. The most sought-after color combinations are Blenheim and Ruby.
Cavaliers King Charles should not be fed human food such as chocolate, onions, avocados, grapes, raisins, macadamia nuts, sugar-free foods, salts, fats, dairy products, yeast-containing products, cereals of any kind, including bread, high-sodium processed foods, cooked beans or peas, or raw foods with unsafe bacteria. They should also be fed balanced diets specially formulated for dogs of this breed. Feeding them too much of anything can cause obesity and other medical conditions, so it's important to be selective and adhere to their recommended nutritional needs.
Before bringing a Cavalier King Charles into your home, it is important to create a safe and comfortable environment for your new pet. Begin by puppy-proofing the area where the dog will be spending most of its time you should be aware of any small objects or hazards (electrical cords, sharp edges, etc.) that could be dangerous to your pet. Next, buy all the essentials for your new pet food and water bowls, a bed, toys, a leash, and any other items you may need.
While the Cavalier King Charles is a medium-sized dog, they are generally considered bigger than smaller breeds. These dogs have a longer muzzle, deeper chest, thicker coat, and longer legs than most other toy breeds. A full grown male can reach approximately 12 to 13 inches in height and weigh between 13 and 18 pounds. On average, they are a bit bulkier than other toy breed dogs, which, combined with their longer muzzle, gives them an illusion of being larger. They can retain a puppy-like behavior and their endearing personalities only adds to their size.
Yes, Cavaliers King Charles are active, elegant dogs with an abundance of energy and personality. They love to frolic in a yard and can be found bouncing around the home, often times chasing the family cat. They make wonderful walking, running or jogging partners and are particularly good for occasional games of fetch. They have an impressive mental capacity that needs to be simulated, something you can do through interactive playtime or puzzle toys. They also enjoy meeting new people and animals, so socializing your pet can be a great way to keep their energy levels high.
It is highly likely that Cavalier King Charles Spaniels will get along with other pets given the breed's friendly temperament. They are usually good with other animals, including cats, so long as they have been socialized properly and introduced to each other in a safe, comfortable environment. It is important to remember, however, that every dog's personality is different and introducing another pet to a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel should always be done with caution. Supervised socialization and desensitization are advised when introducing another pet into the family.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have a reputation for being friendly, loyal and affectionate dogs, but when it comes to their intelligence levels, opinions can vary. Most people consider them to be be relatively smart breeds; agility and obedience trials have proven that this particular breed is capable of learning complex tasks and commands. However, while they may learn quickly, they can sometimes overestimate themselves and may run off to explore before taking in all the details. Training them requires consistent reinforcement, patience and creativity, and they often do best when provided plenty of daily exercise.
