Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a breed that has been around since the 17th century. They were originally bred as a lapdog for royalty and their sweet nature and friendly disposition allowed them to gain favor amongst the English upper classes. Among the breed's more unique traits is their tendency to get along well with cats and other small animals. They are also extremely loyal and need regular exercise to stay healthy. A fun fact about the breed is that they are one of the few breeds commonly called 'comforters' because of their history as a lapdog.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have a type of coat that is considered hypoallergenic and low-shedding. However, they are not completely non-shedding. Their coat, while it may not shed much hair, still requires frequent grooming to prevent matting. Additionally, the breed does produce small amounts of dander, though no more than any other breed. As a result, while the breed is often considered one of the best for allergy-sufferers, it is best to spend time around the breed before committing to it.
Finding the best food to feed your Cavalier King Charles can be a difficult decision, as there are multiple factors that come into play. Generally, diets that are higher in crude protein and fat as well as lower in carbohydrates (known as the “grain-free” diet) should be considered. This type of diet has additional benefits in that it is less likely to trigger food allergies in your Cavalier King Charles. Also, these types of diets are good for maintaining a healthy coat and helping to reduce the risk of urinary tract issues.
To become the best puppy parent for your Cavalier King Charles, dedication and commitment are key. Start by making sure you have the time and energy to give your pup the attention they need. Ensure you have nutritious food and plenty of playtime scheduled into every day. Brush your pup's coat regularly to keep it healthy and groom them often to maintain their preened look. Make sure their vaccinations and deworming schedule is properly kept up, as well as regular visits to the vet for check-ups.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are considered small-to-medium breed dogs, and they typically measure between 12 and 13 inches in height when fully grown. Despite their relatively small size they are considered to be quite regal and majestic, due to their aristocratic ancestry. They also tend to have very friendly and loving temperaments. Therefore, when compared to other larger breeds, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are not considered big dogs.
The precise amount of minutes that you should walk your Cavalier King Charles every day varies based on a number of factors such as age, size, health history, activity level, and weather. To help ensure your pup is getting enough exercise, establishing a schedule and gradually increasing the amount of time spent on their walks is recommended. As a general rule of thumb, it's a good idea to aim for a minimum of 30 minutes per day, but if your pup is very active and healthy, they will likely benefit from an hour or more of brisk walking each day.
Absolutely – Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are fabulous family dogs. They are well known for their affectionate nature and are suitable for any size home. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are gentle, good-natured, and outgoing with a wonderful temperament. They have an eagerness to please and are highly devoted to their owners, so they make excellent companions. Cavaliers are also generally very good with children and other family pets, happily adapting to life in a lively household. They will happily join in with any activity and can be trained easily.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are considered very intelligent dogs; however, their character and intelligence vary from dog to dog. They have a desire to learn and are eager to please their owners, and with the right training, respond quickly and positively to commands. They can also be easily distracted because they love to explore and be active. Overall, Cavaliers are considered to be smart and level-headed companions that can pick up on new concepts quickly and respond strongly to positive reinforcement.
