Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are classified as a Toy breed of dog. This breed is very small in size and usually weighs between 10 and 18 pounds when fully grown. They have a slightly rounded head, and large, soulful eyes, as well as a long muzzle and ears that flop down. Cavaliers are very friendly and outgoing, and they get along with both adults and children. It is no surprise that they are popular companion animals! This breed also loves long walks and playing fetch, so they are often sought after by dog owners who want an active pup.
Managing allergies with Cavalier King Charles Spaniel requires patience and commitment. Keeping the home as allergen-free as possible, such as vacuumed carpets and regularly washing bedding, will help control allergens. The pet should also be groomed regularly to avoid shedding and build-up of dried saliva on its coat, and should be bathed regularly. Try to keep your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel away from areas of the home where allergens tend to accumulate, like the bedroom.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels should not be fed people food, as it can upset their digestive system. High-fat foods such as bacon, sausage, cheese, and fried foods can be dangerous for a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Table scraps can also be difficult for a Cavalier to digest and can cause pancreatitis. Dog food formulated for their size and age can give them all of the nutrients they need and is the best option for them.
Cavalier King Charles dogs may have a few extra requirements compared to other dog breeds. They need plenty of exercise and regular brushing to keep their long, thick coat free of matting. They thrive in an environment with plenty of human interaction, so they may need to be taken on daily walks or playtime. Cavalier Kings Charles are known to be very food-motivated so feeding should be monitored closely. They’re prone to heart murmurs, eye anomalies and hip dysplasia, so regular checkups and health screenings may be necessary.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels come in four sizes: Toy, Blenheim, Ruby, and Tricolor. The Toy size is the smallest, standing at a maximum height of 12 inches with an average weight of up to 13 pounds. Blenheim is slightly bigger, standing at 13-14 inches and having an average weight of 13-18 pounds. The Ruby size stands at 13-15 inches with an average weight of 18-20.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel dogs love water activities such as swimming, and many of them are naturally strong swimmers. They have a coat designed for waterproofing and their bodies are built for power in the water. While the breed is not known for being a long-distance swimmer, they love to run and splash around in shallow areas of the lake, stream or pool. Swimming is a great way to keep your Cavalier King Charles healthy, as it uses many muscles and provides a good cardiovascular workout.
Cavalier King Charles can definitely be a great choice for a family dog. Not only do they have gentle, loving personalities and a great temperament, they are also very smart and easy to train. They have a natural inclination for companionship, making them perfect for families with children as they are gentle and loving. In addition, Cavaliers tend to be fairly low maintenance. They do require regular grooming, moderate activity and some obedience training and socialization, but overall their needs are not as complex as many other breeds. With that, they can be an ideal choice for a family companion.
The amount of time necessary to train a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel on a daily basis really depends on the particular dog. For the average dog, 10 to 20 minutes of structured training sessions are recommended, along with around 10 minutes of general activities, such as walking. However, if the dog tends to be a bit more stubborn, an additional 10 to 15 minutes of extra practice may be needed. If the Cavalier King Charles is to compete in dog shows or agility courses, longer practice sessions of 25-30 minutes will be required.
