Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are a small breed of dog originally bred as a companion dog in the 17th century. They are friendly, gentle and loyal making them wonderful family pets. These beautiful pups require lots of love, affection and exercise to stay healthy and content. They have a long, wavy coat that may be a variety of shades of white, black, tan and ruby. Additionally, they can be prone to certain diseases and conditions that a breeder should be able to inform a potential adopter about.
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has a beautiful, luxurious coat that is both silky and thick. The breed can have two different coat types: a smooth or a long/silky type. The smooth variety has a fine-textured coat that is fairly short compared to the long coat. The long coat has a more plush feel to it and is much longer, falling to the level of the elbows and hocks. No matter which coat type it has, the general color of the Cavalier King Charles is always the same – a ruby, black and tan, or tricolor.
When caring for a Cavalier King Charles, it's important to know which foods are safe and which are not. The best way to prevent any digestive issues and health problems is to avoid feeding them certain foods. This includes human food such as processed meats, chocolates, sweets, and caffeinated drinks as these can lead to indigestion and dangerous levels of sugar. Additionally, avoid giving them cooked bones as this can cause choking or intestinal obstruction. Lastly, maintain a balanced diet of foods designed for dogs, and only provide treats as a reward.
To properly prepare your home for your new Cavalier King Charles, make sure its food, water, and other supplies are arranged in an easily accessible location that it can access throughout the day. Consider creating a designated space for your pup filled with its favorite toys and pet bedding, to make it feel safe and comfortable in its new home. As well, your home should be pet proofed to prevent any accidental injuries or ingestion of harmful materials and, depending where you live, it is also important to double check that you are following the municipal bylaws and laws for pet ownership.
The size of your Cavalier King Charles puppy will depend on which type of breed you choose. The American Kennel Club (AKC) recognizes two types of Cavalier King Charles puppies: Blenheim Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, which are smaller, and ruby Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, which are larger. Generally, blenheim puppies weigh somewhere between 10 and 18 pounds and stand 12 to 13 inches tall at the shoulder, whereas ruby puppies can weigh anywhere from 14 to 18 pounds and stand 12 to 15 inches.
Cavalier King Charles need to get plenty of exercise to stay healthy. Taking your furry companion for a daily walk is an excellent way to provide them with the activity they need. Depending on your pup's age and breed they should be getting at least 30 minutes a day. For senior Cavalier King Charles, elderly or ill dogs, shorter walks of 15 minutes to half-an-hour can be beneficial. Allowing them to play in a securely fenced-in yard is also a great way to offer exercise without the need to walk all the time.
Yes, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels generally get along well with kids. They are known for being particularly gentle, loyal, and people-oriented, making them a great fit for households with children. They are also quite small, so they are easily manageable by young kids. Beyond that, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels prefer to be in a family setting and enjoy being around people. A few minutes of cuddling or playing with a child is usually all it takes for them to become very attached and loyal family members. Because of their gentle, trusting nature, they make wonderful companions for children.
The amount of time you need to dedicate to training a Cavalier King Charles varies depending on the individual dog and the goals you hope to achieve. Generally speaking, a minimum of 10-15 minutes of structured training sessions per day is recommended to ensure that your dog is making progress and staying engaged. You should also aim to build a few shorter sessions into your day, such as10 minute potty break and play sessions, or 5 minute fetch/reward sessions.
