Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have been a beloved breed for centuries. They typically have a silky and smooth coat, which can come in a variety of colors such as Ruby, Blenheim, Tri-Color, and Black and Tan. The Cavalier usually stands between 12-13 inches tall and can weigh anywhere from 13-18 lbs. These small friendly dogs have lovely gentle eyes and a gentle temperment. They are also known for their sweet, eager-to-please personalities.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel dogs are not non-shedding breeds; however, they do have very low shedding coats compared to other dogs. This means they have fur that does not shed as much as those in other breeds. Despite the low shedding nature of their coats, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels may require regular brushing to ensure any fur that does shed is minimized. Additionally, daily walks and other activities must also be done thoroughly and regularly in order to avoid an increase in shedding.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels should not be fed anything with added sugar, such as chocolate or candy, as it may harm their digestive system and cause obesity. Additionally, though many foods for human consumption are safe for dogs, some, such as garlic, onions, and raisins, are toxic to them. The efficacy of feeding cooked bones to pets is debated,so it's best to err on the side of caution and feed Cavaliers only chewable treats made expressly for dogs.
Preparation for a new Cavalier King Charles is key to a successful start to the relationship. To best prepare, start by gathering all necessary supplies, such as a comfortable bed, food, treats, toys, grooming supplies and any medication prescribed by your vet. Secondly, research the breed as much as possible. Learn about their shedding patterns, health issues, possible vaccinations and the best ways to train and care for them. Next, have your home ready for a puppy.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels usually range in size from an average of 12 to 13 inches for a Toy and 13 to 18 inches for the larger Standard variety. Toy Cavaliers weigh an average of 5 to 9 pounds and Standard Cavaliers an average of 18 to 19 pounds. The size of the dog depends on its breeding and lineage. Some Cavaliers appear larger than their parents because of their genetic code, but the average size remains the same. Despite their size, Cavaliers are robust and cheerful, with a loving personality, and make wonderful companions.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have a moderate amount of exercise needs and require at least 30 minutes of physical activity a day. It is important for this breed to get outdoor exercise as they have a tendency to become overweight if they don’t. Mental stimulation is also key for this breed. Playing various games such as fetch, running, or tagging, as well as performing activities such as scent work or agility training can help to keep your Cavalier in shape and mentally engaged throughout their day.
Absolutely! Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are renowned for their affectionate, loving nature and make for excellent family dogs. Loyal yet gentle, these remarkable dogs are eager to please and make great companions for people of all ages. Not only do Cavaliers have attractive looks, they have high intelligence which allows them to quickly pick up on commands and routines. As an added bonus, they're also quite low maintenance when it comes to grooming, which is perfect for busy families.
The short answer is yes, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are generally considered to be intelligent. While the breed has often been called a "lapdog," their size can be deceptive; they can be cunning problem solvers. Like all dogs, whatever breed they are, they need to receive regular mental stimulation to prevent boredom--which can lead to destructive behaviors. So, to keep your Cavalier King Charles happy and healthy, provide them with regular obedience and agility training, brain games and plenty of playtime.
