Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are family oriented dogs that enjoy the companionship of people. They are a small breed with a friendly and gentle demeanor. Their silky, smooth fur comes in four distinct colors black and tan, ruby, black and white, and blenheim. They typically live between 12-14 years and require daily mental and physical activities for their health and well-being.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are known to be relatively low-shedding. This breed has a soft, silky coat that does not need a lot of maintenance and will not make the home feel overrun with hair. However, it should be noted that Cavs do still shed some and will need regular brushing to help keep any shedding in check. It is also important to remember that their long coat will require regular trims and clipping to maintain a healthy, clean look.
It's important to be aware of what you should not feed your Cavalier King Charles. These dogs are prone to obesity and can develop health conditions from eating unhealthy foods, so it's necessary to avoid certain human and type of food. Things such as onions, garlic, grapes, and anything with a high sugar content are all human food that should be avoided. Additionally avoid animal proteins like pork and beef, as well as highly processed foods and treats. Certain off-brand treats could contain acrylamide, a potentially toxic chemical, so check your treats before feeding.
Cavalier King Charles have some unique requirements compared to other breeds. Generally, they need a lot of human interaction and socialization daily exercise and play time are essential for their mental and physical health. They do well with a variety of living spaces, but must have enough room to move around and stretch their legs. They're also prone to dental problems, so regular brushing and vet visits is important to keep their teeth and gums healthy. And, because they have long fur, it's important to groom them regularly to prevent matting and tangling.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are not considered big dogs within the greater dog breed spectrum. In terms of size they are considered a small breed with a weight range of approximately 8-14 pounds and a height of 12-13 inches for an adult. They are considered a toy breed due to their size and are classified as a spaniel by the American Kennel Club (AKC). While the breed is smaller than many other dog breeds, they are a very active and energetic breed that needs regular exercise making them a great choice for small families with active lifestyles.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, also known as Cavaliers, are an active toy breed. To keep them healthy and happy, they need regular exercise. Depending on your Cavalier's age, breed, and health status, the amount of exercise they need may vary. Generally speaking, about 30 minutes of activity a day should suffice. This can include a mix of walks to continue muscle conditioning and mental stimulation, playtime such as fetch or agility course running, and even a leisurely bike ride.
Generally speaking, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels can do well with other pets when raised alongside them from a young age. They tend to form strong bonds with their families and are known to be very affectionate, so providing they are sufficiently socialized, they usually get along with other animals quite well. However, as with any pet, it's always important to introduce them to other animals carefully and to monitor their interaction. If properly managed, there's no reason why a family's pets couldn't all be the best of friends.
Training your Cavalier King Charles should last no less than 30 minutes a day. This is particularly important if you plan on taking your pup to competitions or events. Keep in mind that this is not a one-time training session, this should be divided into smaller sessions throughout the day. Quality matters more than quantity, so make sure to find a certified trainer that is experienced with the breed and tailored exercises. Also be sure to provide your pup with plenty of healthy treats and positive reinforcement throughout the process so they can keep their enthusiasm!
