Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are classified in the Toy Group of dogs. These friendly and gentle dogs have been around since the 17th century and were first bred by King Charles II of England. They are considered a toy breed because of their small size and charm, not to mention their loving personalities. Cavaliers make perfect family pets, as they get along well with both children and other animals. They also do well as apartment dogs, as they don't require a lot of exercise and are known to be quite calm.
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is known for its thick, luxurious coat that comes in four color varieties: Blenheim, Tri-color, Ruby and Black and Tan. The Blenheim coat has chestnut markings on a pearly white background, while the Tri-color coat has tan markings on a black and white background. The Ruby coat is a solid, deep-colored mahogany, and the Black and Tan coat has black markings on a golden background.
To keep your Cavalier King Charles healthy and happy, it's important to provide them with the proper nutrition. A good diet consists of premium dog food that is rich in animal proteins and fats, as well as carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals. You should also keep in mind that your Cavalier has a small stomach and may benefit from smaller meals throughout the day. To supplement their food, you can give your pup occasional treats such as carrots, apples, blueberries, and small pieces of cooked chicken or fish.
Before you get a Cavalier King Charles, it is essential to make sure you have all the necessary items. Some of these items include a dog bed, toys, brushes, leash and collar, a dog tag with your contact information, and high-quality dog food. Additionally, you should have a few different training materials such as books, a crate, and treats so you can begin the process of training your new pet. Also, you might need some extra items such as a dog stroller, raincoat, or a seat belt if you plan to take your dog on long car rides.
Although archetypal Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are small, they can often mature to an average size of 12-13 inches in height from the shoulders, with a corresponding weight range of 13-18 pounds. They are considered a small to medium-sized dog and their adorable petite features (including a long, silky coat) give them a delicate and regal look. Their size and docile nature make them a great companion pet as well as an all-aging family pet.
It is recommended to walk your Cavalier King Charles at least 30 minutes per day, including both exercise walks and potty walks. This will give your pup a chance to stay active and healthy. Additionally, shorter walks throughout the day can provide your pup with enrichment and exploration as they help to stimulate their senses. While the exact amount of time needed per day will depend on the individual needs of your specific pup, all Cavaliers will benefit from daily physical activity. Exercise can help to build and maintain strong bones and muscles, provide mental stimulation, and strengthen your bond.
Generally, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels get along very well with kids. They are gentle and sweet in nature and have a playful, fun-loving demeanor. In addition, because of their small size and heritage as lap dogs, they enjoy the attention that little ones provide and they are full of love and cuddles. However, it's important to remember that even such a wonderfully tempered breed needs discipline and early socialization, especially when kids are present. With some basic obedience training and supervised playtime, your Cavalier King Charles can be a great companion to your kids.
Training your Cavalier King Charles can be an enjoyable and rewarding activity! It's important to begin as soon as possible when they are a young puppy and provide consistency and structure in your methods. Set short training periods with lots of breaks in between to keep them from getting too overwhelmed. Use positive reinforcement such as treats, verbal praise, or gentle touch to reward behaviors which you'd like to see more of during training. Stick with simple commands such as sit, stay, come and down and use repetition with clear, consistent verbal cues.
