Questions & Answers
The Cavalier King Charles is a small spaniel breed originally identified in England. Intelligent and friendly, they are usually very devoted to their owners. One of the breed's defining traits is its luxurious and silky coat which can come in four colors: black and tan, ruby, blenheim, and tri-color. When mature, they are approximately 12-13 inches tall and weigh 13 to 18 pounds. They are active dogs, loyal and loving while at the same time docile and tolerant which makes them great companions for both people and other pets.
While there are no guarantees, it is unlikely that a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel would cause allergies. This breed has a reputation for being hypoallergenic, and most people with allergies report no reaction when in the company of a Cavalier. It's important to note, however, that all dogs produce dander and saliva which can potentially trigger allergens, regardless of their breed. To be sure, it's best to speak with your doctor or allergist to find out if a Cavalier would be a safe bet for you.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are normally fed a quality dry dog food, which should be divided into two or more meals per day to reduce the risk of bloat and other digestive problems. They may also enjoy fresh fruits and vegetables such as carrots, apples, sweet potatoes, broccoli, celery and spinach in small amounts. Cooked lean proteins such as chicken, fish, and cottage cheese may be treated as occasional snacks. However, it is important to avoid feeding them table scraps or foods that contain too much fat because obesity can be a big health risk for this breed.
Before buying a Cavalier King Charles, it's important to make sure you have the essentials. If the 4-legged family member will be living inside your home, be sure to have a bed, a collar, leash, toy, treats, and food and water bowls. You'll also need to consider getting a grooming brush and shampoo, as they are a breed of dog that needs regular grooming. Toys are important to give them stimulation, especially if they are going to be home alone during the day.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are generally classified as a small breed of dog typically being around 11 to 14 inches in height and weighing between 14 to 18 pounds. However, this can vary depending on the individual dog. While they may not be as large as some other breeds, they can still be considered big dogs in many ways. They have large, endearing eyes and soft, fluffy coats that can often make them appear larger than they are. Additionally, Cavaliers may be small by breed, but have big personalities and require plenty of mental stimulation and exercise, similar to larger breeds.
Absolutely! Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have a strong love of water and swimming, and it's a great form of exercise for your pup that many enjoy. Swimming can even help them stay fit in their older years. It's important to ensure that your Cavalier has had a day off to rest in between swims, as swimming puts extra strain on their body. With the right supervision and environment, they can ignite a spark of excitement at the thought of hitting the pool.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are known to make wonderful companions, and for the most part, they tend to get along well with other pets, such as cats, dogs, and sometimes even birds. However, as with any other breed, introducing a new pet to the home should be conducted in a safe and thoughtful manner. Before introducing the two pets, ensure they both have been spayed or neutered, and are up-to-date on all vaccinations. You may also consider enrolling both pets in a basic obedience class for socialization.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are known for their intelligence and trainability. While each individual dog has its own personality, the breed as a whole is considered to be among the smartest dog breeds. Cavaliers learn commands quickly and have an eagerness to please that makes them easy to train. They are considered relatively easy to housebreak and don't require hours of intense activity. Cavaliers are often quite intuitive and can quickly pick up commands and routines. They usually respond very well to positive reinforcement methods such as treats, praise, or toys.
