Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles is a small spaniel-type breed of dog that originated from England during the 1600s. The Cavalier King Charles was made to be a loyal pet and companion and is known for its friendly, gentle, and outgoing nature. As the popularity of the breed grew, King Charles II even declared that his Cavaliers had the right of entry to any public place. As a result of selective breeding and dedication to their history, the modern-day Cavalier King Charles remains a gentle and loving pup.
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has a beautiful, silky coat that comes in four colors: Blenheim (red and white), tri-color (black, tan, and white), ruby (red) and black and tan. The coat is medium in length with a slightly wavy texture not too long and not too short. The Cavalier King Charles coat requires a great deal of brushing and occasional trips to the groomer, so owners should be prepared to invest the time necessary to keep their pet looking tidy.
Feeding your Cavalier King Charles is an important part of keeping them healthy and happy! It's best to feed them high-quality kibble that is specifically designed for a small breed. Look for a kibble that is made with real meat like chicken or beef, and avoid ones with fillers like wheat, corn, and soy. Omega 3 fatty acids are also important for a healthy skin and coat, so make sure the food you choose is rich in those too. Additionally, adding in some wet food with their dry food can help provide some additional moisture and flavor.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel does not have any special requirements. However, an owner should provide regular veterinary care, a healthy diet, plenty of physical and mental exercise, proper grooming, and positive reinforcement training. Because they are a brachycephalic breed, they are more predisposed to health issues such as heart murmurs and patellar luxation, so having a regular heart exam and checking for orthopedic issues is important.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels come in four different sizes: Toy/Small size, Miniature, Standard, and Solid Color. Toy/Small size is between 8-11 inches tall and weighs between 4-9 pounds; Miniature is between 11-13 inches tall and 9-13 pounds; Standard is between 13-15 inches tall and 13-18 pounds; and Solid Color is the same size as a Standard but comes in a single color. Any combination of black and tan is acceptable for Solid Colors.
An ideal amount of daily activity for your Cavalier King Charles would be roughly 30-60 minutes of walks or playtime. Some days may require more or less, depending on the season and the dog's individual needs, but in general, shooting for approximately an hour of activity per day should keep your pup healthy and content. If you have a busy lifestyle, it's a great idea to spread out the walks into shorter bouts of 10-15 minutes a few times a day.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are highly trainable, gentle and loving dogs that typically get along exceptionally well with children. They enjoy long walks, cuddling, and playing, and many even like to accompany children on bike rides or car rides. In terms of temperament, these dogs are usually great with children who are respectful and treat the dog with kindness. They can be good motivators for kids to play outdoors and engage in healthy activities. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels need regular exercise to remain healthy, which can be provided by the child who adopts the pup.
Training a Cavalier King Charles can be very rewarding. First and foremost, ensure your pup is comfortable in their environment and with you as their trainer. When possible create positive reinforcement environment with plenty of treats and positive reinforcement when they have done something well. Start with simple commands such as sit, stay, down, come, and heel. Review with the pup often to ensure they are remaining focused. Additionally, practice training in different environments such as outdoor spaces. This will aid in the pup's comfort level and ensure they can focus in different places and around different people.
