Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are considered to be a small-sized breed of spaniel. They are a friendly breed known for their loving temperaments and are often favored for their gentle natures. They have long, silky coats that can come in four different colors; Blenheim, ruby, tricolor, and black and tan. Generally speaking, Cavaliers grow to between twelve and thirteen inches in height and most weigh between thirteen and eighteen pounds.
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is known for its lush and silky coat, which can come in a variety of colors, including black and tan, ruby, tricolor, and blenheim. Not only is their coat beautiful, but it is also hypoallergenic, easy to groom, and prevents other dogs from getting close. Its lovely hair tends to frame the face and the ears, making it look almost angelic. The coat is double, with a weather-resistant top layer and undercoat for warmth.
It is important that Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have a balanced diet to remain healthy. Some foods can be especially harmful to them and should not be in their diet. Grapes, raisins, and other dried fruits are toxic to Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and can cause severe kidney damage. Onions and garlic can also cause anemia. Chocolate contains theobromine which can be toxic to them, as can sugar-free candies which use xylitol.
Preparing your home for a new Cavalier King Charles is an important first step. Make sure your home is safe and comfortable for your dog by childproofing hazardous items and areas that could harm your new pet. Take the time to puppy-proof your home as much as possible to prevent destruction and chewing of furniture or other items. Additionally, give your new Cavalier King Charles a safe, comfortable place to rest, such as a raised bed or dog crate. You may also want to consider setting up a designated area for your dog's food and water.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels come in four sizes, determined by height and weight. The Toy size and Miniature size ranges between 8-12 inches and 8-14 pounds respectively. The Blenheim size ranges between 12-13 inches and 13-18 pounds, and the Ruby size is the largest at 13-14 inches and 18-19 pounds. The average size for these breeds is usually the Blenheim or Ruby size, with the Toy and Miniature sizes bred to have more of a toy-like appearance.
Yes, Cavalier King Charles are active dogs that need plenty of daily exercise. They were originally bred for hunting and continue to enjoy it as a leisure activity, going for walks or hikes and playing fetch. They make great walking or jogging companions, and they require multiple opportunities to run and play outside each day. This lively breed is also smart and loves to interact with their humans, so exploring the outdoors and backyard play can keep them entertained and content.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel's are excellent dogs for first time owners. They are intelligent, affectionate, and devoted to their family, which is perfect for beginning owners. Given a loving home and plenty of attention, Cavaliers can be an ideal companion for first time dog owners. They don’t require a great deal of exercise, making them well-suited to a family who may not have large time commitments. Cavaliers can be taught basic commands with ease and do not require a great deal of encouragement to learn.
The amount of minutes per day you need to train your Cavalier King Charles depends on a variety of factors, such as the age of the dog, their experience level, and the behavior issue that you’re hoping to address. That being said, it’s generally recommended to give puppies more than an hour of exercise and training each day, while adult dogs should get at least 30 minutes of activity. It’s important to remember that these are minimum guidelines, so giving your dog additional time for both physical and mental exercise is always beneficial to their development.
